CARD OF THE WEEK: September 26-30, 2022

Eight of Pentacles

World Spirit Tarot

by Madame Onca O'Leary, Lauren O'Leary, and Jessica Godino

September 26-30, 2022: Nothing flashy here, necessarily, this week. Just skillful, reliable labor. But the skill is key, no matter what the specific method or goal may be. Come with it. Give your best effort, and leave nothing to chance.

Mind your potential to instruct and inspire others in their own work. That's another reason why your care will be so significant this week--your influence on others, what they value, and how they operate. This is a time in which mentorship shines and makes a difference.

Our card also reminds us that working with Tarot requires skill and care, and both require time. One needs sufficient time and devoted attention to build skill. One needs sufficient time and devoted attention to do any work with care. Respect that time.

CARD OF THE WEEKEND: September 24-25, 2022

Ten of Pentacles

Oriens Animal Tarot

by Ambi Sun

September 24-25, 2022: We see pentacles dropping to the seabed like stones, the element of Earth (Pentacles) meeting the element of Water. The whale, a powerful creature of water, dives deep, deep, deep.

So often in conventional Tarot, we've been encouraged to think of Ten of Pentacles as a sign of stodgy, inflexible convention. It's the highest number in the Earth cards, sometimes representing powerful, rigidly-structured institutions, individuals, laws and the like. But what if, like the whale in Ambi Sun's painting, we dived deep within the emotional and creative realms within to find resources to manifest all that we want to bring into existence?

As I've noted before, when you get to know Tarot well, you can see how it offers a wide, complex range of applicable, useful interpretations.

For this weekend, think about how you might dig deep beneath the surface of things and find the good stuff, the really good, durable building material for your future.

Take a Tarot workshop with Eva!

Meet me at Dancing While Black: Share • Practice • Thrive | a virtual marketplace!

Since 2012, Dancing While Black (DWB) has served as a launching pad and community hub, bringing Black dance voices to the fore and centering a space for Black dance artists to reflect and create authentically. Throughout that time, DWB has supported 22 emerging Black artists as Fellows, incubated more than two dozen works and held countless convenings for folx to share, connect and simply be.

I'm thrilled to support DWB as it celebrates its Tenth Anniversary year. I'll be joining some of my favorite folks from the dance community, a wonderful lineup of presenters, on Saturday, October 1 at DWB's virtual marketplace over Zoom, and whether or not you are a Tarotista or a dancer (my presentation is not a dance workshop), you're welcome to join in!

Take a Journey with Tarot

with Eva Yaa Asantewaa

11:00am–12:30pm Eastern

Eva Yaa Asantewaa has been deeply immersed in Tarot practice since the early 1980s as a counselor, teacher, and meditation guide. She will guide the group in a process using Tarot symbols for revelation and liberation. You’re encouraged to bring materials to record your experiences and thoughts: a notebook or loose paper with a pen or other materials for writing and drawing or your phone to make audio notes. You need not have a Tarot or any kind of oracle deck for this workshop but, if you do, feel free to keep it nearby to consult. The images Eva refers to will be screen-shared and visually described.

Note: Participants will need something for writing or sketching.

Secure your space for Saturday, October 1 by registering here. See you there!

Do you have any access needs for this event? Please let us know by September 19th.

Sliding Scale: $0, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100

We value both accessibility and class analysis and leveraging privilege to support others in our community. We ask that you pay on the scale according to your ability, in order to support access, and engage in interdependence in action. The practice of choosing a rate that is both affordable and heartfelt is a mindfulness and justice-seeking practice. We will not question your self-determined rate.

CARD OF THE WEEK: September 19-23, 2022

dance on the back of a crocodile

Blooming Lovelies

by Amber Fossey

September 19-23, 2022: Are you ready for some rare excitement? Hop on! You'll go places you never imagined!

Never fear. You're well supported and protected from harm. How? It could be your own courageous energy and effort. Or it could be wonderful forces in your environment. Or maybe both.

You might be the crocodile...or you might have one at the ready!

In any case, Amber Fossey's card, dance on the back of a crocodile, like Tarot's Fool card, urges you to take a chance and go for it!

See more of Fossey's enchanting artwork, including her Blooming Lovelies oracle deck, here.

CARD OF THE WEEKEND: September 17-18, 2022

run baby run, until you are free

Blooming Lovelies

by Amber Fossey

September 17-18, 2022: Amber Fossey's lovely Blooming Lovelies oracle deck gives us our card of the weekend--run baby run, until you are free

Freedom is your watchword this weekend. What do you need to know and what do you need to do to get yourself free?

Consider how this question applies to material situations as well as to emotional, psychological, and/or spiritual freedom. It presents an urgent challenge to you to act on your own behalf. When it comes to freedom ways, do not procrastinate.

As you run, a dove--symbol of Spirit, Higher Mind, and purity--flies beside you. Have no fear. You are not alone.

See more of Fossey's charming artwork here. My thanks to the dear friend who introduced me to this work!

CARD OF THE WEEK: September 12-16, 2022

l'Eremita

Tarocchi di Vetro

Elisabetta Trevisan

September 12-16, 2022: It's useful to pay attention to whatever detail first draws your eye when you gaze at a card. For this week's card--Elisabetta Trevisan's l'Eremita, The Hermit--I am drawn to focus on the lamp held not aloft but near the middle of the hermit's body.

We see the hermit in a moment of stillness. If he were moving, he might hold that lamp up to cast light on his path. Instead, it nestles close to his humble robes, almost as if its natural state is to be a part of him. And, yes, imagine that light as part of him, central to the body. What does that tell you?

This image feels quiet, warm, and solemn--meditative. There's no hurry and no distractions. This wise man takes his time and tunes into himself, finding holy radiance within. You can do the same.

Take a moment out, with the spirit within, before you speak, before you act.

A steady force, this archetype counsels you to give yourself space to greet all the questions and encounters of your week with patience, attentiveness, and interior awareness.

CARD OF THE WEEKEND: September 10-11, 2022

Spiritual World

Sacred Mirrors Cards

by Alex Grey

September 10-11, 2022: In a way, we now continue with The Sun in this decidedly non-Tarot deck by mystic-artist Alex Grey. As "the source of all light," Spiritual World raises our awareness of the unity of all things, all time, all space in Spirit and as Spirit. This sun rises like a spider in its web of universal interconnection and influence.

A curiosity piece in my collection, Grey's unusual deck was created not for mundane divination but devotion and esoteric meditation. You can prop up the oversized cards on your altar for ritual work or on a nearby desk or other surface for daily contemplation.

Spiritual World makes a good follow-up to The Sun, the card of the week we've just passed. Ideally, you've done some work with The Sun. Re-read its message now and think about that message operating in your life and world on the highest levels.

CARD OF THE WEEK: September 5-9, 2022

The Sun

The Nigel Jackson Tarot

by Nigel Jackson

September 5-9, 2022: Secluded with their sacred, votive fire, two pagan ritualists invoke the power of Earth's neighboring star--a mighty, sometimes baleful god nevertheless needed for the well-being of everyday life. The heavens are both beautiful and terrifying; distant yet intimate in their influence on us; potentially deadly to human life if not approached with respect and preparation. And so are the deities we humans created to explain the ways of Earth and cosmos to ourselves.

I grew up in Tarot thinking of The Sun in only the most benign ways, but we must reconcile both (or, perhaps, the proper word would be all) aspects of this awesome deity. Handle with care.

As a Major Arcana card, The Sun will cast tremendous energy around any cards that surround it in a reading, and it can cast either warming, purifying light or deep shadow. When you draw this card in a reading, consider who's near it and whether the solar effect is, ultimately, one of light or one of obscuring darkness.

Similarly, as your card of the week, The Sun can greatly brighten matters for you. Hoorah!

But be aware of what The Sun might throw into shadow. Is that going to be a positive ("Let's just put this thing aside for now, while I concentrate on this thing instead")? Or is it going to be a problem?

How (and how well) you make it through this week will depend on how you view The Sun's action in your current life. Be sure to keep some journal notes as you go.

CARD OF THE WEEKEND: September 3-4, 2022

La Temperanza

I Gatti

by Osvaldo Menegazzi

September 3-4, 2022: "You humans always like to laugh at TikTok videos showing us cats knocking over glasses of water! Well, what if that cat were knocking it over just to pour that water into another glass? Clever! Okay, I know that sounds silly to you, but what if?"

Indeed, Osvaldo Menegazzi's La Temperanza puts a different spin on our familiar Temperance archetype.

As I see it, Menegazzi's drawing introduces the possibility that a little bit of mischief, or something you consider to be a petty nuisance, might turn out to have a different impetus and a different outcome--a better or, at least, acceptable one--than first expected.

So, have patience and a sense of humor. Things are not out of control. They're really in order--or will be--if you just give them a minute to reveal their true nature.
