CARD OF THE WEEK: October 31-November 4, 2022

Water

Ancient Minchiate Etruria

a reproduction of a 1725 Florentine Minchiate oracle deck

Wishing all who celebrate a beautiful, blessed Samhain! For those of us who know there's really no "veil" to thin and really no grave danger from the "spirit world" to avoid--just a heightened awareness of our alignment with Spirit--let us acknowledge our ancestors/elder spirits/Mighty Dead and express gratitude for their ongoing guidance and care. For more on this concept, visit here.

October 31-November 4, 2022: Smack dab in the middle of a card dedicated to the element of Water is a vessel of transport over water. So, let's go with that dominant placement and consider this a message about expertly riding waves of change and changeability.

This ocean water looks choppy, but the elements of Earth (body of the ship) and Air (driving the sails) have a central role in this narrative. Purpose and direction. The sturdiness to endure and survive and brisk energy to keep going.

Consider how the symbolized properties of Earth and Air carry you safely over the challenges of times of major change.

And, if you get a chance this week, spend a little time in rest and contemplation in view of a river, lake, or ocean.

CARD OF THE WEEKEND: October 29-30, 2022

Ace of Swords

Ancient Minchiate Etruria

a reproduction of a 1725 Florentine Minchiate oracle deck

October 29-30, 2022: Think back to Pamela Colman Smith's Ace of Swords (Rider-Waite Tarot) and how a sword-wielding hand emerges from a cloud. For this quite different Minchiate deck, the sword arrives via an equally mysterious figure--who is that hand and arm attached to?--but one more likely to be earthborn, not ethereal. And earthly power also appears in the form of a simple crown circling the point of that hoisted sword.

Introducing the mystical element of Air and, with the Ace, its most subtle and basic form--like a puff of air or a whisper--the Minchiate's Ace of Sword points towards the opportunity for high authority and power which may be earthly or intellectually expressive. The Aces can show us what can build or be built, in stages, if given sufficient attention and care.

Tending to your mental processes and to the fruits of thought will be key this weekend. Make notes on "things to keep in mind," for the mind will be a powerful tool. Meditation, journaling, freewriting, chanting, singing, channeling, and quiet conversations are especially favored and valuable.

Also keep in mind that this weekend carries the energy of Samhain, a time of heightened communication with the revered and beloved dead. It's an excellent time for tuning in to Spirit and downloading what you most need to know!

CARD OF THE WEEK: October 24-28, 2022

Adiel

Gold & Silver Guardian Angel cards

by Angela McGerr

October 24-28, 2022: Angela McGerr's unusual deck of 144 tiny cards has long sat among my collection, never consulted for divination. But whether you believe in angels or believe in them only in the most unorthodox ways, McGerr's approach might appeal to you. She designed her Gold & Silver Guardian Angels cards to be comforting sources of daily guidance.

Our Card of the Week, Adiel, advises a period of gradual letting go. McGerr associates Adiel with the full moon and the period of gradual decrease after the moon has expressed its full brilliance.

A bit of Google research on the name Adiel suggests that this angel governs the documentation and archiving of history. As such, Adiel might also prove to be an ally for anyone who desires to review--and then consign to the vaults of time--anything that need not continue along into the future.

So, what are you preparing to release?

I say "are you preparing"--not "are you prepared" or "are you ready"--because the card's guidance suggests stages of release, a winding down, not a sudden shift away.

How can you gradually lessen the amount of attention and energy you put into this situation? And how will you allow (check the implication of that word, too) this situation to recede, resolve, clear, largely on its own without your having to work hard at it?

This is a good week to begin this process, though this week might or might not bring ultimate closure.

Just start somewhere. Just start to allow.

CARD OF THE WEEKEND: October 22-23, 2022

Femme dans un Parc

by Edgard Maxence

October 22-23, 2022: This painting by French Symbolist Edgard Maxence (1871-1954) speaks to me as if it were one of Tarot's queens. Bedecked in peacock feathers (in the avian world, a male adornment), his subject faces the right edge of the image, therefore--as I would read it in Tarot--intently gazing into the future.

Our queen's stride or roll, as we might imagine, is direct and confident. With her peacock feathers, she carries a symbol of high power and Third Eye-level insight, good fortune and magnetic beauty.

Find this essence and energy within yourself, this regal radiance from head to toe, from local self to Expansive Self. However this manifests, cultivate it. Imagine where it can take you.

CARD OF THE WEEK: October 17-21, 2022

St. Francis

October 17-21, 2022: In this image from a holy card I purchased in Germany, St. Francis, dressed in his humble garb, holds a sweet lamb in his arms, both of them surrounded by a patch of dry, prickly brambles. The good monk protects the lamb from this harsh environment and keeps it warm.

This image reminds you, this week, to be gentle and loving to yourself, to your dreams and ideas. It alludes to the harshness of much of what we see arising in our nation and world. It bids us be protectors and preservers of all that is good and endangered, just as St. Francis shields the lamb with his own vulnerable body.

It's a reminder, too, that there is still much worth protecting and upholding--both within us and outside in our often-difficult surroundings. Meditate on that which continues to hold value for you. What remains precious? How can you play your part in creating safety and amplifying goodness?

CARD OF THE WEEKEND: October 15-16, 2022

Five of Pentacles

Daughters of The Moon Tarot

by Ffiona Morgan

October 15-16, 2022: The number 5 and the element of Earth form a difficult pairing. Earth changes slowly, gradually, incrementally. It holds and holds. The number 5 represents pivotal change, and that change can come in swift, dramatic, disruptive ways. Hence, Ffiona Morgan's iconic Daughters of The Moon Tarot offers the vision of ruptured land, a far more disturbing image than what might be familiar to you from, say, the classic Rider-Waite deck. Morgan gave her card this keyword: Earthquake.

So, yes, this card of the weekend could represent a tough moment. Or it could point towards liberation.

Think of ways the sudden breakup/breakdown of established systems, patterns, beliefs, and habits might be a positive development. What needs shaking up? What needs severing? What new forms should be allowed to arise from the ashes?

CARD OF THE WEEK: October 10-14, 2022

I am taking the time I need

Goddess on the Go cards

by Amy Sophia Marashinsky with art by Melissa Harris

October 10-14, 2022: Yes, pace yourself. Give yourself plenty of time, as needed, according to your own lights. How often do we hear this advice?

Let me offer a new way of looking at this familiar counsel.

What is time? Is it only that linear progression from a discrete past through to a perceived present and onto a hoped for (or dreaded) future?

Or is there more to it? Can we complicate our awareness of it? What kind of fabric is it made of? How is it textured? Shaped and reshaped? Can we move through its dimensions freely, examine time in a multitude of ways? Can we move in and out of it?

And if this expanded sense of time is real, as is our freedom of movement, then what are we capable of perceiving, understanding, doing?

When we say, "I'm taking the time I need," what else do we mean, or can we mean?

Have a good time meditating on these questions in your new week!

Reader Request: The Hierophant

The Hierophant

Modern Witch Tarot

by Lisa Sterle

I hope you're enjoying our CARD OF THE WEEK! Now, here's a bonus Reader Request post!

******

I was thrilled to hear from internationally celebrated performance artist Gabrielle Civil who sent a request for a look at The Hierophant in comic illustrator Lisa Sterle'Modern Witch Tarot. Gabrielle loves consulting Tarot with her women's writing group as they launch each new year of exploration, and Sterle's Hierophant has blessed this one.

Old school interpretations of The Hierophant associate the central, enthroned figure with religious authority--a pope to The High Priestess's papess, if you will. So let's revisit the familiar Rider-Waite image by Pamela Colman Smith for contrast with Sterle's depiction.

The Hierophant

Rider-Waite Tarot

art by Pamela Colman Smith

Papal imagery, to be sure. But in Sterle's Modern Witch Tarot, you'll find archetypes embodied by contemporary, racially-diverse characters. The "charioteer" of The Chariot straddles a motorcycle. The High Priestess sits with her open laptop, not a mysterious scroll, resting on her lap. And The Hierophant--here a tattooed, barefoot woman of color--is visited not by two monks but, instead, two apparently everyday people about whom we can discern little because they face her, not us. These humans could be anybody--not specifically two Roman Catholic monks--and that's a useful update.

Along with a variety of visual revisions, Tarot's Hierophant, like most classic Tarot images, has undergone evolutionary changes in how it is interpreted and utilized. Sterle has chosen to simplify and civilian-ize the Hierophant's garments, and even her scepter now becomes a quartz crystal at the end of streamlined wand. With her right hand, she makes the same gesture of blessing, though--because she can.

For me, the Hierophant is not a Roman Catholic pope but any central entity who bridges the communication/exchange gap between two different and differing entities. Because of the Hierophant's extensive knowledge of the realities, experiences, and languages of both sides, the Hierophant can explain one to the other, identify commonalities, and help forge potential connection and cooperation.

Think about this, and you can see how the role of this archetype might manifest in a wide variety of situations--from internal conflicts to external ones we experience or witness.

For a group of women writers, there are so many ways in which this could play out. But, as a lifelong writer myself, I know the struggles that women--especially women of color--can face as they seek to find and make meaningful space for their visions and voices in this world. Some of those struggles are indeed internal but all are impacted by external history and society.

To all for whom this message resonates, may The Hierophant help you find a powerful peace and pathway for your expression. May you find support and nurturance within community. And may you discover the many ways in which you can be a transformative Hierophant for others.

CARD OF THE WEEK: October 3-7, 2022

Queen of Wands

The Light and Shadow Tarot

by Brian Williams with art by Michael Goepferd

October 3-7, 2022: You don't need color to feel the vibrant fire of the Queen of Wands as artist Michael Goepferd has imagined her here in this black-and-white image. The art crackles with energy and warmth. I love everything about this depiction, especially the details of sunflower, leopard, and flaming staff.

Draw close to this queen if your energy is low and need replenishment, if you have lost your taste for something in your life or for life itself, if you need encouragement and a loving but firm push towards a new step or new achievement.

Or perhaps something will need your warm energy and good cheer this week. What can you contribute to perk up a situation, get it moving? Yes, if necessary, we can find these archetypes within ourselves and express their ways in the world.

CARD OF THE WEEKEND: October 1-2, 2022

Ten of Wands

Neo Tarot

by Jerico Mandybur with art by Daiana Ruiz

October 1-2, 2022: Artist Daiana Ruiz's Ten of Wands image reminds us of energy (Wands) or resources being gathered up and redirected. The force is high (Ten), and the effort can be arduous, but this work must be carried forward.

For this weekend, consider how you've been using your energy--in which direction and for which purpose. It might be time to reassess and take a new approach.

Withdrawing from a habitual pattern and turning things around might take strong effort, but now is the time.
