CARDS OF THE WEEK: January 30-February 3, 2023

The World

and

Nine of Chalices

Afro-Brazilian Tarot

by by Alice Santana with art by Giuseppe Palumbo

January 30-February 3, 2023: Rather than shuffle a deck for these posts, I usually take a "stroll" through the deck and stay alert to the way one or another card reaches out to me. When I pulled Afro-Brazilian Tarot from the basket where it resides with a number of other decks, I found myself drawn to the two cards you see above--The World and Nine of Chalices (Cups). I swear it took me a minute to recognize that those poses are identical!

Major or Minor, they are sisters raising magickal symbols in supplication of the grand forces of nature. And both are celebrating and expressing thanks for their bounty or achievement.

So, this looks like a week to move forward with confidence and reap the rewards of all your efforts. This is a week to believe in yourself but also in the forces beyond you that both challenge you and lift you higher. This is a week to meditate on gratitude for the abundant harvest.

CARD OF THE WEEKEND: January 28-29, 2023

 Nine of Swords

Golden Tarot

by Kat Black

January 28-29, 2023: Yeah, I know. A scary one. I call Nine of Swords the nightmare card, and I have a lifelong history of being plagued by nightmares. Of course, it could be the card of worries so all-consuming that you never get to fall asleep and dream to begin with.

For this version of the card, from Kat Black's Golden Tarot, I suggest taking a steadying breath and focusing on one or a few details that draw your attention and spark your imagination. I'm drawn to the faint gold pattern on the dark drapery. They suggest texture rather than uniformity. What appears bleak needs closer examination to reveal its details--many of which might include subtle sources of light and potential.

In the small book accompanying this deck, Black describes the dog as "menacing" and clearly relates this symbol to a term often used to speak of depression--"the black dog."

But what if this dog--as I and so many others have experienced with cats--has approached the suffering human to offer companionship and comfort, even guidance?

To me, the imagery hints at an ambiguous situation, more complex--and malleable--than thought at first sight.

Even the orientation of the swords could signal available resources of mind and speech to be seized and used in positive ways. Grab one!

CARD OF THE WEEK: January 23-27, 2023

 Seeker of Cups

 World Spirit Tarot

by Madame Onca O'Leary, Lauren O'Leary,

and Jessica Godino

January 23-27, 2023: Some Tarot images draw you right into the energy of a moment, and here's a lovely example. The World Spirit Tarot's Seeker of Cups (Knight of Cups) and his steed pause in their waterborne journey to gaze at a gold chalice floating just above their heads. And, suddenly--whew!--this song came to mind!

Rhiannon Giddens sings Sister Rosetta Tharpe's "Up Above My Head"

Tarot's knights--or seekers, as conceived here by the O'Leary-Godino team--are all about focused, dedicated action. And Cups symbolize the flow of emotion and creativity.

Our seeker/knight lifts his arms in adoration and receptivity. He and his stallion are ready and eager to see a precious gift safely to its destination and recipient.

This week, consider what you most love, what you hold in highest value. What do you wish to bring forth in this world or pass along to others? How can you prepare to fulfill your most sacred commitments?

The Seeker of Cups' sensitive and loyal heart leads the way in all things. This card asks you to listen deeply and never betray your heart.

CARDS OF THE WEEKEND: January 21-22, 2023

Two of Pentacles and Temperance

Neo Tarot

by Jerico Mandybur with art by Daiana Ruiz

January 21-22, 2023: Balance and blending are the key concepts here, illustrated by two cards from Neo Tarot who wished to collaborate on this weekend's message--the Minor Arcana's Two of Pentacles and the Major Arcana's Temperance.

The first most often refers to balance within practical, earthly matters with the prancing figure skillfully keeping everything moving in harmony. The second takes things to more psychological, archetypal, and magickal levels, hinting that it's possible to make the "impossible" happen.

Consider the truth, too, that what we think of as earthly and what we think of as spiritual are already one, already perfectly functioning as one. Lean and relax into that reality.

I continue to enjoy Daiana Ruiz's art for this deck, and I especially love the sapphire blue spurt of water from vessel to bowl and the lavender aura emanating from the Temperance angel's head. And, of course, that outfit with its wing-like power shoulders!

CARD OF THE WEEK: January 16-20, 2023

The Tower

Neo Tarot

by Jerico Mandybur with art by Daiana Ruiz

January 16-20, 2023: Might it ever be possible for the sight of The Tower to bring a laugh? Or a wheeeee!!! woohoo!!!? Or, at the very least, a sigh of relief?

It might not seem the way things typically go with Tarot's Tower, but you never know. I'm definitely getting a curiously giddy vibe from this Neo Tarot Tower today.

The disruption of the status quo introduced by a higher, external force (that pointing index figure) both liberates enormous energy and gives the toppled figure a Hanged Man-style brave new perspective on things. And it's all to the good.

So, if you often find yourself asking for sameness--perfect stability and safety--maybe ease up on that this week and see what novel things this week will introduce to your life. Accept that you don't know everything and that your good may come in a form as yet unanticipated.

Let go and fly!

CARD OF THE WEEKEND: January 14-15, 2023

The Hanging Cat

Tarot for Cats

by Regen Dennis with art by Kipling West

January 14-15, 2023: Well, at least illustrator Kipling West did not turn this "Hanging Cat" head down like Tarot's traditional Hanged Man!

Author Regen Dennis seems to think West's tuxedo cat has voluntarily submitted to its human's grasp. But anyone who has ever lived with a cat--and especially a tuxedo cat--knows holding a cat that way will only lead to furious hisses and wriggles. Kitty will soon jump free and, since West's scene is clearly outdoors, scoot off in hot pursuit of the nearest sparrow.

The usual Hanged Man's upended suspension offers a radically different way to look at things, sometimes completely out of this world. West's hanging cat might have a temporarily heightened level from which to view its surroundings, but this position will be uncomfortable, unacceptable, and brief. The cat did not choose it. And, for cats, choice is everything.

So, here are a couple of different ways to view and work with this weekend's card:

Consider the way I normally interpret The Hanged Man. This card comes as advice to take time out and perform an unusual, even extreme, action or practice that would help you explore a question or issue from a quite new, potentially transformative angle. How might this insightful breakthrough help you resolve your concern or situation?

Or...you can be a tuxedo cat. Don't let someone force you into a view or position that you do not choose. You're perfectly capable of leaping to your own perch from which to observe and understand things. You have a right to autonomy over your own body, mind, and spirit, and that right is worth fighting for.

CARD OF THE WEEK: January 9-13, 2023

 Page of Cups

Greenwood Tarot

by Chesca Potter and Mark Ryan

January 9-13, 2023: Our kingfisher friend--Greenwood Tarot's Page of Cups--fulfills a beautiful promise now and foretells a promise to manifest in times to come. To receive that future beauty one must recognize, accept, and fully integrate the true wonders of the current moment, be sensitively, humbly, and gratefully open to them. Recognize the lovely gift within yourself that is yourself.

Here's how you'll fly close to your desires and reward--by knowing that you are already the recipient of good and grace. Take note of what's around you and within you. For this week, identify the many gifts you have received and are continuing to receive.

Each time negative energy arises within yourself or your surroundings, acknowledge its presence but counter that negativity with thoughts and affirmations that strengthen your self-worth.

As you do, you're training yourself--and the universe--to associate your being with creativity, justice, healing, and joy. What's good belongs to you and, more and more, will gravitate towards you.

CARD OF THE WEEKEND: January 7-8, 2023

 Seven of Pentacles

Revelations Tarot

by Zach Wong

January 7-8, 2023: When you reverse Zach Wong's Revelations Tarot cards, they show you a different picture of the central figure. The Seven of Pentacles, for instance, turns a guy whose crossed arms suggest satisfaction, even smugness, into one whose body language suggests he's ready to smash the joint.

A time of pause, rest, settling in, reflecting, and taking stock is suddenly upended. The once-gathered pentacles appear to be scattering all over the place.

In a reading, then, much will depend upon how this card arrives--right-side up or reversed. And some of you don't accept and read reversed cards (I do). Pay heed to how this binary shakes out in your current or considered situation.

CARD OF THE WEEK: January 2-6, 2023

  Six of Knives

The Hoodoo Tarot

by Tayannah Lee McQuillar with art by Katelan V. Foisy

January 2-6, 2023: All the Hoodoo Tarot cards have a hazy, somber, ghostly cast. Open this deck, and you're in Spirit country. In the underworld. In ancestral territory. In the watery subconscious. And this week's card, Six of Knives--or Six of Swords, as a standard Tarot deck would name it--shows a journey by boat through a beclouded environment.

You might be familiar with Six of Swords cards that depict a rower standing over a shrouded, seated passenger as they push off towards an unseen, perhaps yet undetermined, destination. In the Hoodoo deck, only one person appears and must row alone.

The swords' hilts suggest crucifixes. For some, these blurry images will subtly stir a memory of religious paintings.

This journey appears self-directed and potentially perilous, more so without an overseeing companion to steer, guide, and protect.

Not hesitating, though, the rower moves out into the changeable and changing environment of air and water, in search of land, in search of something that can hold and be held. Is there agreement and investment in this journeying? Or just resignation?

Author Tayannah Lee McQuillar offers many ways to understand her Six of Knives, leaning towards either positive or negative interpretations. I'd say, the essential difference comes down to personal attitude. Conditions are what they are, but how do you wish to row your boat? By clinging to the past and what no longer works? Or by setting off, with energy and resolve, to fight for your future?

Welcome to 2023.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! SPECIAL CARD FOR THE DAY!

Son of  Baskets

The Hoodoo Tarot

by Tayannah Lee McQuillar with art by Katelan V. Foisy

January 1, 2023: Happy New Year!

Our special Card of the Day--perhaps, for the year itself--is, appropriately, a most gentle one as we ease our way into the journey of 2023.

The previous 2020s have been painful for many. So this card, Son of Baskets--with its youngster bearing flowers, backed by an abundance of rushing water--calls for a refreshing start, a renewal, and generosity of spirit.

Call the spirit of Son of Baskets to you--Baskets is the Hoodoo deck's version of Cups--especially in the midst of difficult moments.

Greet the New Year with fresh perceptions, eagerness to learn, to grapple with untried and unexpected things, with an awareness of how your naturally open heart might bring flexibility and creativity to any matter in which you engage.

Spirit wants you to receive the gift of every moment, even challenging ones, and to recognize its loving and supportive presence in all things.

As always, I wish you the very best!

Don't forget to come back tomorrow for the CARD OF THE WEEK!
