January 2-6, 2023: All the Hoodoo Tarot cards have a hazy, somber, ghostly cast. Open this deck, and you're in Spirit country. In the underworld. In ancestral territory. In the watery subconscious. And this week's card, Six of Knives--or Six of Swords, as a standard Tarot deck would name it--shows a journey by boat through a beclouded environment.

You might be familiar with Six of Swords cards that depict a rower standing over a shrouded, seated passenger as they push off towards an unseen, perhaps yet undetermined, destination. In the Hoodoo deck, only one person appears and must row alone.

The swords' hilts suggest crucifixes. For some, these blurry images will subtly stir a memory of religious paintings.

This journey appears self-directed and potentially perilous, more so without an overseeing companion to steer, guide, and protect.

Not hesitating, though, the rower moves out into the changeable and changing environment of air and water, in search of land, in search of something that can hold and be held. Is there agreement and investment in this journeying? Or just resignation?

Author Tayannah Lee McQuillar offers many ways to understand her Six of Knives, leaning towards either positive or negative interpretations. I'd say, the essential difference comes down to personal attitude. Conditions are what they are, but how do you wish to row your boat? By clinging to the past and what no longer works? Or by setting off, with energy and resolve, to fight for your future?

January 1, 2023: Happy New Year!

Our special Card of the Day--perhaps, for the year itself--is, appropriately, a most gentle one as we ease our way into the journey of 2023.

The previous 2020s have been painful for many. So this card, Son of Baskets--with its youngster bearing flowers, backed by an abundance of rushing water--calls for a refreshing start, a renewal, and generosity of spirit.

Call the spirit of Son of Baskets to you--Baskets is the Hoodoo deck's version of Cups--especially in the midst of difficult moments.

Greet the New Year with fresh perceptions, eagerness to learn, to grapple with untried and unexpected things, with an awareness of how your naturally open heart might bring flexibility and creativity to any matter in which you engage.

Spirit wants you to receive the gift of every moment, even challenging ones, and to recognize its loving and supportive presence in all things.

November 12-13, 2022: Truth be told, I did not immediately groove with The Hoodoo Tarot when I first saw its cards. With the exception of certain black-and-white decks I own, I'm pretty much into vibrant color and other bedazzlements in my oracles! By comparison, Katelyn V. Foisy's art appeared dull and dismal. It took a while to sense the value of this aesthetic choice.

To me, now, the hazy images reflect the indistinct, fleeting nature of our perceptions of the spirit world. They suggest how this indeterminate, malleable fabric of possibility can allow each of us to perceive, align, and work with exactly what's needed in any given moment.

And, so, you look at the Hoodoo's Daughter of Sticks astride that rearing piebald stallion, understand that it matters not what the rider actually looks like or where the two of them have found themselves. They are wherever you are. And, with hoodoo, you are in a cultural realm where humble sticks are more likely to be found than fancy wands but are no less magickal.

Daughter rides the horse, but no worries if your gender is other. She rides within you. And the power of the element of Fire is the same--bravery, enthusiasm, passion, high spirit, wild spirit.

This card cries Hell, yeah! to anything you have been considering and, especially, anything you've been leaving aside. Take it up. Make it work. Now is the time.

Let the Daughter of Sticks think you into action. Your energy will be at top form this weekend. If you've been procrastinating, get off your duff and get the damn thing done.

The Hoodoo Tarot

August 27-28, 2022:  Readers interested in Black southern folkways will enjoy Tayannah Lee McQuillar's Hoodlooo Tarot. I offer two cards for this weekend's guidance. Artist Katelan V. Foisy's subdued coloration lead you into a dreamy state where ancestral spirits from centuries past float forward and speak.

Of this pair, Strength will be the more immediately familiar image. Here, we have a lady and her big cat--this time a puma, certainly more geographically plausible than a lion. Unlike conventional images of this Tarot archetype, here the relationship between the human or angel and the feline reflects not hierarchical control but kinship and equality. Both beings gaze directly towards you, partners in sharing determination and fierceness. Take their generous gifts and find the fortitude within yourself.

Mother of Knives bears the qualities of Tarot's Queen of Swords, a leader noted for exceptional intelligence, focus, discernment, an expert communicator and warrior. For McQuillar, though, she specifically bears the identity of a member of one or more secret societies traditional to Black southern community. She carries wisdom from both cultural and esoteric understanding of the bible open before her. Consult the wise elder. She will offer frank answers to your questions and not steer you wrong.

Remember, Tarot's Queens know everything, and when they look at you, they're also looking at the roots and the context of your situation as well as what can lie ahead. They are particularly interested in how you fit into the possible future. They have more on their minds besides just you, and that makes their message to you stronger and surer.
