Zoom "sΓ©ances" continue this Summer!

Hathor

Goddesses Knowledge Cards

by Michael Babcock with art by Susan Seddon Boulet

My Zoom “sΓ©ances” started as a little Facebook joke and grew into a space where folks find time to breathe, take a break, and explore and share the fullness of heart, mind, and spirit. Our practice is, at once, restoration and resistance.

In these challenging times, it is rare to find spaces like this or make time away from daily stressors. So, I’m inviting you to sit (sΓ©ance) with us and take your place within this energy.

Our next two Zoom sΓ©ances will be held on:

Saturday, July 9, 1pm to 2:30pm Eastern

Saturday, July 23, 1pm to 2:30pm Eastern

(These monthly gatherings will be suspended in August.)

Admission is free. Donations are appreciated and accepted via Venmo or Zelle.

RSVP by contacting me here (see below), and you will receive the Zoom link.

We look forward to welcoming you to our circle!

CARD OF THE WEEK: June 27-July 1, 2022

Sanctuary

Triple Goddess Tarot

by Isha Lerner with art by Mara Friedman

June 27-July 1, 2022: Another beauty from Isha Lerner and Mara Friedman's Triple Goddess Tarot. This card, Sanctuary, represents Tarot's High Priestess and is, decidedly, a warmly appealing one.

At the same time, I don't think you want to rush up and disturb her meditation.

Better to follow her example and take time for your own tuning in. She will meet you there.

That's it. That's all you need to know from me. If you do take the time, truly devote and honor it, you'll find out whatever else you need to know.

Chains off!

The Devil

Rider-Waite Tarot

art by Pamela Colman Smith

The Devil is a liar, a hypocrite. Take those chains from around your necks.

The majority of Americans support the right of all pregnant people to have legal access to abortion. This Supreme Court overturning of Roe v. Wade feels like a disaster to us now, but we have the power this year to turn it into a resounding disaster for the Republican Party.

Let's band together and get it done.

CARD OF THE WEEKEND: June 25-26, 2022

Eight of Blades (Hokhma/Decisions)

Daughters of the Moon Tarot

by Ffiona Morgan

June 25-26, 2022: If you're a strict Tarot traditionalist now gazing at Ffiona Morgan's Eight of Blades, you might be thinking, "Wait! What happened?" Pamela Colman Smith's bound and blindfolded woman from her familiar Eight of Swords for the Rider-Waite deck has been transformed by Morgan for her feminist Daughters of the Moon Tarot.

No longer imprisoned and disempowered, Morgan's woman of wisdom (Hokhma) now stretches her arms in freedom and agency, grasping a scythe in either hand. Six other scythes encircle her, floating in mid-air under the power of her intelligence and magickal will.

In this astonishing image, I love how the scythes also suggest swirling question marks, and the desert scene evokes a place of hard, possibly urgent decisions to be made in a landscape devoid of comfort and distractions. The figure shown here seems skilled at juggling these questions and, in fact, may have deliberately chosen this rigorous place to set this inquiring process in motion.

The scythes could also symbolize discernment and choice, as Tarot's swords often do. However, as scythes, specifically, their function is even more focused on pragmatic acts of cutting and clearing, not potential conflict and violence. Sometimes truth and the path forward become obvious when clutter and obstructions are successfully removed.

We might even imagine these scythes are what severed the rope that once bound this woman.

Here we have the power of deep inquiry, interrogation, and change that goes far beyond shallow, surface examination and acceptance of easy answers.

Consider this:

What are the right questions, the incisive ones, that lead to true freedom?

READER REQUEST: 7 of Clubs

 7 of Clubs

Thank you, Denae Hannah, for sending this request for a look at the 7 of Clubs from a standard playing card deck.

Loosely connected to Tarot's Seven of Wands, the 7 of Clubs can represent a high level of energy--active, dynamic force--and having to be grounded and well prepared to meet all of the energy, good or not so good, coming your way. Otherwise, it can be a source of stress.

Seven of Wands

Left: Rider-Waite Tarot, art by Pamela Colman Smith

Right: Neo Tarot, art by Daiana Ruiz

On the other hand, old divination traditions associate the 7 of Clubs with money, the amount of which might vary, but certainly a current or currency flowing. Even a little money moving at a time is movement indeed. So, things might be parceled out carefully, perhaps slowly, but steadily, and that has to be good enough.

As with its Tarot cousin, the 7 of Clubs might inspire you to think about how other folks are involved in a venture around money or what money can buy--either by having joint control, joint responsibility, and/or being the ones reaping the benefits of this movement of currents/currency. If there are others involved, you all must be carefully organized. Planning, communication, and negotiation should be clear to each or all of the invested parties.

You don't want the potential strife or even chaos that Tarot's Seven of Wands can warn against. You're counseled to take your time and get things properly sorted before they spin out of control.

Another caution might concern potential competitors or forces resisting the flow of your movement. The specific look of the 7 of Clubs suggests opposition--on one side, a mass of energy moving upward in a block, those five clubs; on the other, two clubs aligned in perfect balance. Of course, sometimes, we do need the disruptive force of the number 5 to break up something that is way too set, too balanced, and thought to be unchangeable.

Should the issue most on your mind not concern money directly, substitute energy and your uses of it, or think more generally about the nature and efficacy of how you are interacting and exchanging with others around some important matter. How do you stay centered and handle the potential for becoming overwhelmed?

So, clearly, there's a lot here, Denae! I hope this gives you a spectrum of possibilities as you consider the meaning 7 of Clubs has for you at this time. Thanks, again!

CARD OF THE WEEK: June 20-24, 2022

Ace of Swords

Universal Waite Tarot

Art by Pamela Colman Smith with coloring by Mary Hanson-Roberts

June 20-24, 2022: Tarot folks who have practiced for years and decades don't need a deck in their hands to summon an appropriate image for the moment. Ask and you will receive. And that is the case with our CARD OF THE WEEK. I asked for a card, and Pamela Colman Smith's Ace of Swords rose up in my mind as if issued forth from a cloud!

Furthermore, the Ace of Swords--which is a card of swift thought--readily offered a self-interpretation I had never before considered: being knighted by the tap of that sword on one's shoulders. And the reason we don't see an actual royal anywhere to do the traditional knighting is that Spirit itself has taken that role.

So, from now on, when the Ace of Swords turns up in a draw or a layout, I will have an additional meaning to try out, depending on the situation at hand.

This week, turn your attention to the role of willing service in your life and work. It could be time to acknowledge how (and what) you have served, to reconsider it, if necessary, and/or to prepare for a new way in which you will serve.

Bear in mind that we can be of service to persons, places, things, ideas, ideals. We serve Spirit as well. To what have you committed (or are now ready to commit) your best?

If you are not happy about how you may have devoted your time and energy, you can map out how to redirect them based on your evolved understanding, values, and needs. A clear choice will lead to well-earned reward.

CARDS OF THE WEEKEND: June 18-19, 2022

Il Bagatto and Gli Amanti

I Gatti

by Osvaldo Menegazzi

June 18-19, 2022: I Gatti ("the cats") is Osvaldo Menegazzi's sweet, Major Arcana Tarot deck, a long-ago holiday gift from a friend who knows how much I adore cats!

I had to share these two images with you today for your weekend:

Il Bagatto ("The Magician"): Look at the insouciance of that kitten and the dip of that feathered cap! Menegazzi's Magician has already done some mischief--see the overturned cup!--and looks ready to reach out a paw and sweep everything else to the floor!

Gli Amanti (The Lovers"): Well, maybe you have an equally adventurous sidekick--someone to share the joy--and, if necessary, the consequences?

Don't hesitate to be playful and a little mischievous. Be reasonably careful and attentive, but be confident like The Magician and have some fun this weekend.

And for all celebrating, Happy Juneteenth!

CARD OF THE WEEK: June 13-17, 2022

Knight of Cups

Tarot of the Four Elements

by Isha Lerner and Amy Ericksen

June 13-17, 2022: I love this deliriously colorful mer-person and dolphin! They encourage us to flow into a new week heart-first.

This Tarot knight is on a mission of love, compassion, and creativity. Emotional as well as intuitive/psychic sensitivity might high for you now but should be safely attuned to purposeful aims.

Trust your gut--your instincts and clairsentience--a little bit more than you usually do. Embrace new dreams and seek out bold new ways to bring them into this world.

Remember that Tarot knights are doers. You must put your deepest-held values into practice or else they will just be rootless ideas and ideals. It's high time for manifestation!

CARD OF THE WEEKEND: June 11-12, 2022

Mask

Wiccan Cards

by Nada Mesar (Solitaire) with art by Chatriya Hemharnvibul

June 11-12, 2022: Masks not only obscure a human face, concealing the reality on the surface or within an individual. Things, places, and situations can also be masked, posing a challenge to uncover their secrets, true identity, and meaning.

For this weekend, I challenge you to contemplate this Mask image from Wiccan Cards, an oracle deck by Nada Mesar (Solitaire) with art by Chatriya Hemharnvibul. To me, it signals the hidden presence of a different reality behind the visible appearance of things, and it advises a deeper exploration to seek the truth.

Looking ahead, it predicts that you will wish you'd had better information before you started a relationship, accepted or turned down a job offer, bought a high-end purchase, moved to a different location, or sent that manuscript off to a publication, totally confident you'd penned the most exciting thing ever written about your topic!

Hold up. Take another look. Ask more questions--of others, of yourself--and get the details you need to make an informed decision or take a critical action.

Astrologers would counsel that, although we cleared the Mercury in Retrograde period as of June 3, we've not yet cleared Merc's lingering tail! Pesky. And what a retrograde period this has been--from petty to brutal. I will say, though, that a Merc Retro can also stir up and dig up hidden matters and present them for correction--if one is willing to make the correction. So, that fits.

Another meaning of mask as symbol relates to protection of the vulnerable from threat--much as we've seen during the COVID-19 pandemic of the past few years.

Sometimes we encounter masked situations or people, and the protection is understandable and entirely justified. Your Card of the Weekend could suggest something you would do well to protect or shield from one or more people, at least for the moment. You will know if this particular meaning holds true in your current experience.

Take some time out this weekend to slow down, check in with yourself, and ask for more clarity. Open your journal and write down what you're sensing and what you feel you need to know. If there's further practical questioning or research you know you need to do, figure out those necessary steps and schedule the time you'll need to address them. Make space for it on your calendar and be faithful to this promise to yourself.

CARD OF THE WEEK: June 6-10, 2022

Two of Wands

Morgan-Greer Tarot

by Lloyd Morgan with art by Bill Greer

June 6-10, 2022: In the Morgan-Greer Tarot, artist Bill Greer's image for the Two of Wands centers one figure in what is clearly an encounter between two persons; we see only the wand, blue sleeve and gloved right hand of the other. The vitality of this encounter, though represented mostly by the figure who takes up nearly the entire width of the card, is vibrant as befits the meeting of fire (Wands) with fire.

Let us then imagine a warm, energetic dialogue or a collaboration and see where it might fit into the expected events as well as the unexpected serendipity of your coming week.

The partly seen figure enters the image from the left, the Tarot card direction I associate with the past. The main figure, squarely central, occupies the present time yet faces the past and elements of the past directly and offers something in the right hand--a crystal ball? a globe? How does all of this imagery influence the story you might tell?

Why this encounter of present with past? What is being delivered?  Or, seen the opposite way--what has been delivered?

What words might be exchanged here? What needs to be discussed? What plans might be hatched by these two people or entities? How might they give and take, ideally as equals or ones who, though very different, each contribute unique strengths?

There is certainly a fiery immediacy to this encounter, a "right now!" So, if you're weighing timing in your situation, bear that in mind. Do not delay.

CARD OF THE WEEKEND: June 4-5, 2022

Judgement

Neo Tarot

by Jerico Mandybur with art by Daiana Ruiz

June 4-5, 2022: Don't you just love this glamorous Judgement angel from artist Daiana Ruiz? And the way the two humans have sprung to life by dancing? In this image, there are no graves and busted-open open coffins in sight--just dancing! Jerico Mandybur's affirmative and gender-fluid Neo Tarot makes room for all of us to manifest and live out our true best selves, as we desire.

I don't know if angels sometimes fluff out their wing feathers the way birds do, but I want you to imagine movement that sends life-giving energy coursing through your body and fluff out the "feathers" in your spirit body as well. Can you fluff out your aura and let it pulse with bright color? And can you project that energy a foot, two feet, three feet and increasingly further away from your physical body? What can that energy do in your immediate environment and, potentially, further?

Take your time and play with this imagery and energy this weekend. Keep notes in your journal and return to this practice whenever you feel the need to refresh and re-affirm your life and your powers.
