CARD OF THE WEEK: August 29-September 2, 2022

Magnifying Glass

Gilded Reverie Lenormand Expanded

by Ciro Marchetti

August 29-September 2, 2022: With Magnifying Glass as your card of the week, you have been counseled to slow down and take the time to examine things carefully in great detail and from all available angles. This can apply to something already in motion or something that might arrive over the course of this week. Don't be so fast to accept things at face value. As needed, ask questions. Poke at the thing!

A wide spectrum of possibility can be indicated. So, don't worry. It's not always negative. Magnifying Glass might bring you something positive and exciting to explore in depth. Just remember that those last two words are the most important in this message!

CARDS OF THE WEEKEND: August 27-28, 2022

Above: Strength
Below: Mother of Knives

The Hoodoo Tarot

by Tayannah Lee McQuillar with art by Katelan V. Foisy

August 27-28, 2022:  Readers interested in Black southern folkways will enjoy Tayannah Lee McQuillar's Hoodlooo Tarot. I offer two cards for this weekend's guidance. Artist Katelan V. Foisy's subdued coloration lead you into a dreamy state where ancestral spirits from centuries past float forward and speak.

Of this pair, Strength will be the more immediately familiar image. Here, we have a lady and her big cat--this time a puma, certainly more geographically plausible than a lion. Unlike conventional images of this Tarot archetype, here the relationship between the human or angel and the feline reflects not hierarchical control but kinship and equality. Both beings gaze directly towards you, partners in sharing determination and fierceness. Take their generous gifts and find the fortitude within yourself.

Mother of Knives bears the qualities of Tarot's Queen of Swords, a leader noted for exceptional intelligence, focus, discernment, an expert communicator and warrior. For McQuillar, though, she specifically bears the identity of a member of one or more secret societies traditional to Black southern community. She carries wisdom from both cultural and esoteric understanding of the bible open before her. Consult the wise elder. She will offer frank answers to your questions and not steer you wrong.

Remember, Tarot's Queens know everything, and when they look at you, they're also looking at the roots and the context of your situation as well as what can lie ahead. They are particularly interested in how you fit into the possible future. They have more on their minds besides just you, and that makes their message to you stronger and surer.

CARD OF THE WEEK: August 22-26, 2022

Universe

Tarot of the Four Elements

by Isha Lerner with art by Amy Ericksen

August 22-26, 2022: Oh, the colors, the colors, the colors! The stars! And, again, the delirium!

I love, love, love this deck! And I'm thrilled to see Universe come up as the card of the week for a week that ends with my 70th birthday!

Let's just say there are stars all over you, and your spirit is all over the stars! You are a being of the universe, and the universe is within you!

CARD OF THE WEEKEND: August 20-21, 2022

Ten of Water

Tarot of the Four Elements

by Isha Lerner with art by Amy Ericksen

August 20-21, 2022: Thank Amy Ericksen for giving us a vision of Ten of Cups--or Ten of Water, as Isha Lerner would have it--that expresses delirium. More than celebration, more than the height of emotion, but out-and-out delirium. I mean, just look at that image!

Overall, I love the festive coloration of Ericksen's art for this deck. Like BeyoncΓ©'s Renaissance (yes, listen, if you haven't), it's a bold vision and damn good healing.

Of course, watch any inclination to over-indulge this weekend--whether it be with substances or emotional excess or expenditure of energy. But this Ten of Water really gives permission for a moment of release. Let go!

CARD OF THE WEEK: August 15-19, 2022

Six of Vessels

The Alchemical Tarot

by Robert M. Place

August 15-19, 2022: One of my favorite cards, Six of Cups, turns up as our card of the week, this time represented by Robert M. Place as Six of Vessels. In Place's image, a person bends to pour water from a large, heavy clay vessel into a metallic vessel lined up with four others of distinct, if humble, materials, colors, and designs. One vessel holds a lovely iris, calling springtime to mind.

If Pamela Colman Smith's Six of Cups has come to signify, for me, the reliable presence and generosity of ancestors and spirits, this card's earthiness further implies that Spirit exists even in the most mundane of beings, objects, and activities, throughout all existence. And that element of giving shows up, again, in the simple act of pouring water.

Lately, TikTok has shown me a few videos demonstrating how filling one's own "cup" to the brim and beyond allows for easily sharing the inevitable overflow with others. You don't have to keep dipping into your own supply and risk running out of time, energy, and sustenance for your own support. That's a clever--and, I hope, persuasive--message for you to contemplate this week!

CARD OF THE WEEKEND: August 13-14, 2022

Ship

Mystical Lenormand

by Regula Elizabeth Fiechter with art by Urban TrΓΆsch

Below:

Ship

Golden Thread Lenormand

by Tina Gong (Labyrinthos)

August 13-14, 2022: With the wind in your billowing sails, you set off on a journey by sea. The natural, elemental forces of magick, Air and Water, as well as a certain boldness of mind and heart, propel you forward.

This Lenormand card, shown here in two versions, represents a yes--movement and momentum. You're called to set off on a course of action. The strong possibility that this action or series of actions will take you out of your habitual comfort zone into unfamiliar territory should be no impediment. Get going.

This reminds me of the words of a former president of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf:

The size of your dreams must always exceed your current capacity to achieve them. If your dreams do not scare you, they are not big enough.

Or, as has been said elsewhere, Feel the fear and do it anyway.

CARD OF THE WEEK: August 8-12, 2022

Above:

Four of Cups/Four of Hearts

Salvador DalΓ Tarot

art by Salvador DalΓ

Below:

Four of Cups

Rider-Waite Tarot

art by Pamela Colman Smith

August 8-12, 2022: Salvador DalΓ's Tarot deck started off as a project for the 1973 James Bond film Live and Let Die. It combines Tarot and playing card conventions--quite handy--with the artist's dream-haunted collage work. This is one of my collector's items, never used in readings. But it serves an interesting purpose for our explorations here on hummingwitch.

DalΓ's Tarot reminds us that, to represent or communicate with the inner dimensions of consciousness, Tarot imagery need not be conventional, literal, or even completely legible. Working with his cards, the busy conscious mind gets distracted by what??? and why???, while inner regions of the self have freedom to sail right ahead, ideally forging connections, processing meanings, and promoting changes.

With his Four of Cups/Four of Hearts, a lone dove perches in a treetop beside a golden goblet. The lad sitting on the ground in fetal position might be sleeping or curved over in despondency. Unlike Pamela Colman Smith's character, he might not be aware of the additional goblet offered by Spirit--at least, not consciously aware. Like Smith's character, though, his body appears closed off in refusal or protection. If he is to receive the spiritual boon of the fourth cup, it will need to be through esoteric, not mundane and obvious, means.

I wonder what your "fourth cup" might be. This week, meditate when you can and look around you for signs that there is one awaiting your notice. Will you accept it?

CARD OF THE WEEKEND: August 6-7, 2022

Two of Swords

The Light and Shadow Tarot

by Brian Wiliams with art by Michael Goepferd

August 6-7, 2022: Early in my Tarot journey, I learned that Two of Swords signifies a clash of ideas and words, a meeting of the minds--on a field of battle! It can also indicate one person's internal conflict, and artist Michael Goepferd depicts it here as a figure wearing a blindfold and positioning the feet in a way that restricts movement. The swords also lock in a cross in front of the figure's headdress like a shield.

I've never considered this before, but the Two of Swords is a big honking NO! card. It refuses. It resists. It leashes and controls. It's stubborn as hell, and it doesn't even want to take the risk of seeing what's right in front of it.

There are times that legitimately call for this sort of resistance and self-protection, just as there are times when this response turns into an unfortunate mistake. Consider that difference as you look at what's emerging within or around you this weekend. It's important to discern that difference and choose your next action wisely.

CARD OF THE WEEK: August 1-5, 2022

Five of Pentacles

Oriens Animal Tarot

by Ambi Sun

August 1-5, 2022: Hey, do you feel like the polar bear at the center of Ambi Sun's Five of Pentacles? The mound of ice beneath you shrinking, making you increasingly isolated and surrounded by deep water?

That pentacle/sun radiates ice-killing heat but, as I see it, the bear holds on with determination, proudly, continuing to be a bear. And that's what I want to share with you, my people, this week.

Shit happens. Continue to be who you are.

Hold on. Dig in. Take a sense of firmness from the four other pentacles that form a kind of forcefield in this scene. That's the strength of the earth element.

Yes, you might be up against difficult and even dire conditions but maintain your sense of self and personal sovereignty. Don't let external circumstances make you give up on yourself and what matters most to you. If anything, represent harder!
