CARD OF THE WEEK: January 9-13, 2023

 Page of Cups

Greenwood Tarot

by Chesca Potter and Mark Ryan

January 9-13, 2023: Our kingfisher friend--Greenwood Tarot's Page of Cups--fulfills a beautiful promise now and foretells a promise to manifest in times to come. To receive that future beauty one must recognize, accept, and fully integrate the true wonders of the current moment, be sensitively, humbly, and gratefully open to them. Recognize the lovely gift within yourself that is yourself.

Here's how you'll fly close to your desires and reward--by knowing that you are already the recipient of good and grace. Take note of what's around you and within you. For this week, identify the many gifts you have received and are continuing to receive.

Each time negative energy arises within yourself or your surroundings, acknowledge its presence but counter that negativity with thoughts and affirmations that strengthen your self-worth.

As you do, you're training yourself--and the universe--to associate your being with creativity, justice, healing, and joy. What's good belongs to you and, more and more, will gravitate towards you.

CARD OF THE WEEKEND: July 2-3, 2022

Ten of Arrows

Greenwood Tarot

Art by Chesca Potter with writing by Marc Ryan

July 2-3, 2022: Ten of Arrows--as imagined by artist Chesca Potter and writer Marc Ryan for Greenwood Tarot--bears no resemblance to classical Tarot's familiar Ten of Swords; its meaning is radically different. Rather than the stark finality of the slaughter imaged by Pamela Colman Smith and those who follow her lead, Potter's painting shows a parent guiding a young child in learning how to shoot an arrow. Their clothing identifies them as members of a traditional society, one in which learning how to feed and skillfully care for and protect oneself and one's community is a matter of life or death.

Our CARD OF THE WEEKEND, then, speaks to the importance of wise guidance, expert teaching, and mentorship, especially as we all navigate times of challenge, confusion, and threat. And when we think of matters of protection and survival, the meaning of this card for you can be metaphorical or literal.

Having people in our lives who have walked difficult paths, knowing the rough patches as well as the sources of refreshment and grace, will be critical. Who are your teachers? Your role models? To whom do you or can you turn when it's time to make your next move?

Or perhaps the card might be talking about you. You have been serving or will serve in that important role for someone else.

The card can also suggest that it's time for someone to pass their knowledge, skills, and/or responsibilities along to someone else--or, at least, prepare them for the time when they will assume a more advanced status in the workplace, community, or family. Again, you could be either the teacher or the taught.

CARD OF THE WEEKEND: April 30-May 1, 2022

Queen of Arrows

Greenwood Tarot

by Mark Ryan with art by Chesca Potter

April 30-May 1, 2022: Sometimes we stumble upon entirely different universes when we visit decks crafted by artists who see traditional Tarot archetypes in unique ways. Greenwood Tarot, created by artist Chesca Potter and writer Mark Ryan, has enough idiosyncrasies to make convention-bound Tarotistas throw their hands up, but it is l-o-v-e-l-y none the less and beloved by many.

Why is Tarot's Queen of Swords--here styled as Queen of Arrows--represented by a white doe resting on grass beneath a hectic sky of swirling yellow/orange spirals? Why do her antlers resemble lava erupting towards that sky and yet also perfectly embracing an airborne valentine? There's a red arrow stuck in the ground by her flank, but the doe seems completely unconcerned with it.

Where is the austere, brainy, challenging Swords/Air Queen we've come to expect? Though, do notice, below, Pamela Colman Smith's own use of yellow, orange, and red. I believe I've talked about this before. Her strong Queen of Swords is not completely without passion.

Rider-Waite Tarot

Reader, I beckon you into Potter and Ryan's world and suggest you ground yourself in what is. Look around and find out.

That sky blazes with the bright fires of Celtic and Wiccan holiday of Beltane (May 1) as does the doe's flaming antlers. Ryan and Potter associate the suit of Arrows (Swords) with the period from Beltane through Midsummer to Lammas (August 1). The appearance of this card on this Beltane weekend definitely has quite a lot of woo to it.

Our queenly doe has charm galore and might have a very special message for you at this particular moment. Sit with her and listen.

CARDS OF THE DAY: January 7, 2022

The Ancestor and, below, Page of Stones (Page of Pentacles)

from Greenwood Tarot

by Marc Ryan with art by Chesca Potter

January 7, 2022: I'm not sure if this much-desired deck is in- or out-of-print at the moment but, when I went looking in one of my baskets for a deck for today, the shamanic Greenwood Tarot--with its mythic, pre-Celtic British imagery by artist Chesca Potter--seemed to leap at the chance to make its presence known.

"Remember me???"

Ah, yes.

I have not looked at this deck in many years, but one thing holds true. Given what powers my Tarot readings, Ancestor would always be a relevant card to turn up, and I am not totally sure I can say I don't have British ancestors. After all, my ancestral home is the former British colony (and slave territory), Barbados.

So, today, you might be moved to delve into your own ancestral heritage and legacy. What riches (or issues to be faced, addressed, and healed) lie there?

Page of Stones (Page of Pentacles) brings the energy and curiosity of the diligent student willing to put in the time to do the necessary research and put it to practical use.

What are you willing to take the time to begin to explore today and to implement? Allow your ancestors to speak through your intuition, and watch for undeniable clues and synchronicities. Let a little bird tell you!
