CARD OF THE WEEK: March 6-10, 2023

 The Tower

Morgan-Greer Tarot

by Lloyd Morgan with art by Bill Greer

March 6-10, 2023: Here's The Tower again. (See a previous visit to The Tower, via Neo Tarot, back in January.) Now, in Bill Greer's art for Morgan-Greer Tarot, the archetypal Tower is besieged by air and sea. You can see three of the four great elements at work here--a rage of Fire, Water, and Air. The Tower itself represents the element of Earth, and that suggests for us that the things we've come to consider normal, stable, and reliable are undergoing radical changes.

Before you freak out about this, pause, take a breath or two, and think about what rightly requires shifts and revisions. The vibe of the times offers momentum for shaking things up, making corrections, sweeping with new brooms. Blockages can be removed. New paths open. Clarity emerges.

It can seem unnerving when big changes happen in a way that seems out of our hands. The very idea of individual control in life gets upended. But you can learn to resist the anxious urge to seize the steering wheel and instead watch the rise of positive developments and solutions you did not anticipate. These changes have their own internal logic, their own rightness.

Rather than fear this time, ask how you can partner with and serve this energy. Sometimes this means doing something you never imagined doing despite any hesitation. Sometimes this means releasing the pressure you put on yourself and/or those around you.

CARD OF THE WEEK: January 16-20, 2023

The Tower

Neo Tarot

by Jerico Mandybur with art by Daiana Ruiz

January 16-20, 2023: Might it ever be possible for the sight of The Tower to bring a laugh? Or a wheeeee!!! woohoo!!!? Or, at the very least, a sigh of relief?

It might not seem the way things typically go with Tarot's Tower, but you never know. I'm definitely getting a curiously giddy vibe from this Neo Tarot Tower today.

The disruption of the status quo introduced by a higher, external force (that pointing index figure) both liberates enormous energy and gives the toppled figure a Hanged Man-style brave new perspective on things. And it's all to the good.

So, if you often find yourself asking for sameness--perfect stability and safety--maybe ease up on that this week and see what novel things this week will introduce to your life. Accept that you don't know everything and that your good may come in a form as yet unanticipated.

Let go and fly!

CARD OF THE WEEK: May 2-6 , 2022

The Tower

The Light and Shadow Tarot

by Brian Wiliams with art by Michael Goepferd

May 2-6, 2022: Michael Goepferd's art makes the familiar Tower archetype more dramatic and visceral than you might be used to seeing. An eruption of energy (the bird/winged eye) from one world to another has caused sudden upheaval of the status quo. You might find that anything from your personal habits of mind to entrenched systems out in the world breaking down or breaking free.

Note the jagged tower structure from which--it can be presumed--the human figure has been ejected. Note the lashing waves waiting to receive him. In this depiction, Tarot takes us from the stasis of the Earth element (the built-up tower) to the rush and unpredictability of Water (waves and the mysteries of the deep, dark ocean below).

Tarot's Tower is one of its potentially "scary" cards but can be a fierce ally when significant change of any kind, internal or external, is desired or necessary. You have to be receptive, though, be willing to soften your own resistance to change, and that, in itself, might be a challenging process.

Start your week off by taking some time to sit and think about changes you might like (or need) to make and where and why you've resisted positive change. Even conditions external to you, which did not originate in your psyche, have a grip on the way you think and how you position yourself in relation to the outside world. You can do better for yourself. You can work on breaking or reshaping those harmful connections.

If you have your own Tarot or oracle deck, set aside some private time and give yourself a reading. This will help identify what aspect(s) of yourself and your life could change and how best to begin the process. It's a good time to pick up your journal and explore this issue and your possible paths to freedom.

A cosmic alarm clock, The Tower signals that the time is now. Do not delay.

CARDS OF THE DAY: January 4, 2022

The Tower

from The Gill Tarot

by Elizabeth Josephine Gill

below: Princess (Page) of Swords and Prince (Knight) of Cups

January 4, 2022: We've seen The Tower before. Remember trying to save the puppy? But today's story, courtesy of Elizabeth Josephine Gill's Gill Tarot, offers a more traditional, Rider-Waite-based depiction of the card of sudden breakdowns and dramatic breakthroughs.

Originally, I shuffled the Gill and drew two cards--The Tower and Princess (Page) of Swords for us today. But I also happened to spy one of my favorite artworks from this deck, the moony Prince (Knight) of Cups, a child of nature. Don't miss the earthen goblet which, it would appear, he has freshly shaped from the clay and water before him.

I sensed the Prince wanted to come along into the story, and his longing was underscored when I took a closer look at the The Tower and realized that both our red-headed Princess and our crowned Prince were likely the same as The Tower's two figures depicted in mid-fall.

See what I mean?

As I've laid the cards out here, both figures fall (no pun) to the right of The Tower and so suggest that their fall has not been fatal. They have landed intact, surviving a period of upheaval that was out of their control.

The Princess can refocus now on her studies, her expressiveness, and all matters of learning and the mind. Her growth continues. The Prince can find a safe space in which to open his highly-attuned senses to the environment and creatively shape what he wants to see in the world out of his love of the world.

The Tower can be something that needs to be struck by lightning, and it's destruction (or its profound change) is a beneficial outcome.

CARD OF THE DAY: December 13, 2021

La Torre (The Tower)

from Cani Tarot

by Osvaldo Menegazzi

December 13, 2021: La Torre (The Tower): a little something for the doglovers from Osvaldo Menegazzi's Cani Tarot!

Cani (Italian for dogs) is a 22-card deck (Major Arcana only) featuring a variety of breeds for its central figures. Finely rendered in black print on heavy, un-laminated, cream-colored card stock, it was a precious collector's item. I have never used Cani Tarot for readings. But since I have featured cats (and other animals) in previous Cards of the Day, it's time to give these dogs their turn on the stage.

So, here is the oh-so-startling La Torre! What's it going to be? Breakdown? Breakthrough? Or some combination of the two?

More importantly, someone please rescue that poor beagle!

It's time to get Doggie outta there, whatever it takes. What it takes might be quite drastic. Nevertheless, survival will require fast action.

For compare-and-contrast, here's the Universal Waite's Card XVI with its well-known Pamela Colman Smith image:

Unlike this classic Tower card--done deal, babe; this is out of your hands--La Torre, as I see it, issues a fair warning and introduces the hint of time and the possibility of rescue, snatching something valuable from impending disaster. A reversed Pamela Colman Smith Tower would do the same, now that I think of it.

La Torre gives you some time to save the pooch, though not a lot of time, and it's going to require quick thinking and, possibly, some heroics on your part. I so hope you are a fan of action movies!

So now, who or what is it you need to grab and rescue?
