April 9-10, 2022: Elizabeth Josephine Gill's Wheel of Fortune brings us not the four winged beings of biblical scripture--lion, ox, man, and eagle, as we would find in many conventional Tarot decks--but, instead, Tarot's four primal elements. Air/Swords, Water/Cups, Earth/Pentacles, and Fire/Wands unite to manifest and empower all dimensions of reality. Gill's wheel bears the colors of the rainbow--again, equal in length and space and firmly conjoined.

The Wheel of Fortune, as a Major Arcana card, can indicate pulling oneself together or, perhaps, pulling a larger system together in a profound, transformative, invincible way.

Ask yourself, then, what needs this level of unification, strengthening, and/or massive change?

What elements within yourself--or outside of you--require shoring up and/or reconnection to other elements so that the whole entity integrates, heals, and flourishes?

Moving away from an old idea of Wheel of Fortune indicating that some folks or things are up while others are down, can we look at this archetype in a way that encourages understanding of the necessary role each distinct part plays in the integrity and success of the whole?

With two mysterious eyes--one floating above the wheel and one at its very center, perhaps Gill is hinting at the importance of a unifying perception of self, life, and reality.

Take some time to meditate on all of this, and have an exhilarating weekend!

December 8, 2021: Hey, folks! I know today's card is a quite bit late. Frankly, I really had hoped to get some card requests from you hummingwitch readers, but that did not happen. That's okay, though. We can move along anyway, and if you do have requests, there's still time to let me know (via the Contact Eva form to the right).

Ffiona Morgan's striking Daughters of the Moon Tarot--very popular with feminist Tarot readers decades ago--delivered Spiderwoman today, and I was glad to see Her.

In a dream a few nights back, a surprisingly animated spiderweb--the web itself, not a spider--extended an ectoplasmic appendage in a friendly gesture. Clearly, here She is, again: Spiderwoman, expressing cosmic interconnectedness and continuity.

Of course, I'm just realizing that my dream could symbolize the Web of the Internet, in which I do find wonderful community!

This Goddess--shown here in Her honorable Crone form--has been spinning and weaving thread forever (and will do so forever). She's an expert craftsperson. There is purpose and order in Her work. Things just make sense.

Spiderwoman also knows how to hook you up with what's right for you. The crescent moon above reminds you of the force of change--as does the fact that Spiderwoman is this deck's equivalent of conventional Tarot's Wheel of Fortune--and that whatever matter is under consideration is a work in progress.

Have confidence in the steady progression of time and the changes and growth it brings.

CARD OF THE DAY: November 25, 2021

 

The Wheel of Fortune

November 25, 2021: Two songs sprang to mind when I drew this card! I'll probably be trying to get them out of my head for the next several days. How'd you like to share my struggle? 😊 Here goes!

I'm going to let two great singer-songwriters--David Clayton-Thomas and Carole King--bring you counsel that might apply to our Card of the Day, The Wheel of Fortune:

What goes up must come down/Spinnin' wheel got to go 'round

("Spinning Wheel," Blood, Sweat & Tears, 1969)

Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose/And sometimes the blues just get a hold of you/Oh, just when you thought you had made it

("Sweet Seasons," Carole King (written with Toni Stern), 1971)

The first is a classic of psychedelic rock, remembered from my high school years; the second, a pop hit for King, came out when I was in college. Both acknowledge the rocky, predictably unpredictable nature of human life but also invoke the power of dreams and visions to move us towards the future our soul holds for us.

Someone is waiting just for you/Spinning Wheel spinning true/Drop all you troubles by the river side/Catch a painted pony on the spinning wheel ride

You know you we can get there easily/Just like a sailboat sailin' on the sea

 

"Drop all your troubles by the riverside" calls up the image of Pamela Colman Smith's Five of Swords-- doesn't it?--and of the Black spiritual "Down By The Riverside," where the singer vows to "lay down my sword and shield/down by the riverside" and "study war no more."

Yes, acknowledge the struggle, how profoundly difficult things have been and can often be. Risk and periodic downturns and failures are realities. But you're being encouraged to hang on and, meanwhile,  feed and heal your mind with hopeful, pleasurable images and ideas that give power to a better future. 

For those of you celebrating Thanksgiving traditions, it's a day for enjoying fun and a generous, sumptuous meal with loved ones. But remember to take some time to nourish yourself mentally and spiritually as well. And, among your thank yous, remember to thank yourself for being here with the potential you have to overcome, to heal, to grow, and to find your joy.
