September 5-9, 2022: Secluded with their sacred, votive fire, two pagan ritualists invoke the power of Earth's neighboring star--a mighty, sometimes baleful god nevertheless needed for the well-being of everyday life. The heavens are both beautiful and terrifying; distant yet intimate in their influence on us; potentially deadly to human life if not approached with respect and preparation. And so are the deities we humans created to explain the ways of Earth and cosmos to ourselves. 

I grew up in Tarot thinking of The Sun in only the most benign ways, but we must reconcile both (or, perhaps, the proper word would be all) aspects of this awesome deity. Handle with care.

As a Major Arcana card, The Sun will cast tremendous energy around any cards that surround it in a reading, and it can cast either warming, purifying light or deep shadow. When you draw this card in a reading, consider who's near it and whether the solar effect is, ultimately, one of light or one of obscuring darkness.

Similarly, as your card of the week, The Sun can greatly brighten matters for you. Hoorah! 

But be aware of what The Sun might throw into shadow. Is that going to be a positive ("Let's just put this thing aside for now, while I concentrate on this thing instead")? Or is it going to be a problem?

How (and how well) you make it through this week will depend on how you view The Sun's action in your current life. Be sure to keep some journal notes as you go.

 The Hermit

April 1, 2022:  Oh, my! It's April Fool's Day! Perhaps we should have had The Fool for today's card. But instead, we're revisiting The Hermit, this time through the sensibilities of artist Nigel Jackson and his eponymous Tarot deck.

When last we saw The Hermit, it was in the shape of an orange elder kitty, perched on a stack of books, gazing down on an inquisitive black kitten--potential mentor and mentee. Jackson's image is more traditional, of course, showing an aged sage making his way through a high, cold, forbidding environment where he's guaranteed the solitude he desires.

I do want to draw your attention, though, to the tiny bag our Hermit wears around his waist. Recall that The Fool, traditionally, also carries a tiny sack or satchel. Both archetypal figures travel light, refusing to be weighed down with too many things in the hand, on the back, and even in the mind--despite the access that The Hermit has to a reservoir of knowledge through daily meditative practice. Or, perhaps, because of the need to make space for that knowledge from the universe, not clogging the mind with the stuff of busy life among mortals.

The gleaming stars and lantern recall the element of fire and light the way, and the magickal wand (also related to fire) has become a helpful walking stick.

Understand that sometimes holding space for yourself, your privacy, your sacred time is the best gift you can give yourself (and others). Understand that times of solitude need not be perceived and experienced as loneliness. Understand how truly and profoundly you are connected to the All and how typically society's restrictions, demands, and distractions keep you from being aware and drawing on that knowledge and power.

The Hermit holds the lantern and shows the way.

December 14, 2021: From deep down in one of my Tarot/oracle deck baskets comes the eponymous Nigel Jackson Tarot, which you'll especially enjoy if Euro-based tales of royal realms and knightly chivalry appeal to you. But if that's not your cultural jam, you might still find Jackson's art quite fetching, as I do.

Today's card, The Sun, caught my eye this morning as I leafed through this deck. Then, after I shuffled the deck, the sunny one elbowed its way forward again, sure as Tarot. The Sun wants to be right here, right now.

Be glad. In The Sun, you have an ally in good fortune. Something major is in the works, some reward, some lovely turn of events. There will be cause to give thanks and celebrate. The Sun shines on you today. Embrace your joy!
