Mystic Faerie Tarot

November 26-27, 2022: If you've ever looked at Tarot's massive Judgement angel as this heavenly being blows a trumpet to raise the dead, you know how commanding this angel can be. Keep that in mind even as you gaze at the gentle Judgement faerie --not angel, this time--presented by Barbara Moore and Linda Ravenscroft in their ornate Mystic Faerie Tarot deck.

Despite the sweetness of Ravenscroft's image, faeries--as understood in old traditions--are not cute little cartoony slips of things that flit about the forest. They're awesome, kickass energies that should be respected.

Here, blowing a slender, elegant trumpet, our Judgement faerie could be understood as a whispery messenger who, nevertheless, gets a big job done. No matter how subtle and evanescent, a powerful message will be delivered--and heeded. The "dead" will rise.

As is often the way with this archetype, consider what in your life needs uncovering, regeneration, and serious re-commitment. What needs to be restored to life, brought back into action--and right now?

Listen for urgent little messages now and heed the call.

The Lovers and Judgement

Big thanks to hummingwitch reader Gloria Carol who sent a request for treatment of two Rider-Waite (Pamela Colman Smith) images--The Lovers and Judgement.

I don't know if Gloria deliberately chose this pair for their visual similarity, but you'll notice that an imposing angel presides over each scene. Both angels have scarlet wings so thick and lush, you know their arrival stirred up the whole of the environment. They signify an urgent intervention. They have broken through the sky with exhortations to humans below to unite (The Lovers) and rise back to life (Judgement).

Also, I absolutely covet the royal purple shawl The Lovers' angel is wearing...but I digress.

With its Adam-and-Eve imagery, The Lovers, in the context of this Major Arcana pairing, can indicate a beginning while Judgement brings us closer to the end--or perhaps the revival or high-level advancement--of a significant process.

One message coming through is: Remember your origins--remember the design, purity, connectedness, and hope--and now answer the call for transformation. 

The angels command us to raise the "dead" within ourselves and the "dead" out in our communities, societies, and world before it is too late.

What have you allowed to wither or die, to go without sun or nourishment? What have you denied because your environment, your society, denied it?

This is heavy recovery work, requiring determination, focus, courage, and stamina. Not every individual or collective of people will be up to the task. But, clearly, the time is now.

CARD OF THE WEEKEND: January 22-23, 2022

 

Ioho/Yew

January 22-23, 2022: This soulful deck, though technically owned by my wife, lives in my stash of collected decks. Although I had quite forgotten its existence, I can tell it's hers and not mine because she inscribed the side of its book with her name!

This series of CARD OF THE DAY posts has been a great excuse to revisit the many decks I've collected over decades--some bought, some delivered as review copies, some dearly loved, some regretted. (There are some you'll never see featured on this blog because...Tarot artists, what were you thinking?) It has also given me a longing for at least two decks I gave away years ago. I just bought a new copy of one of those, happily still available at a normal price, and we might take a look at that one next week!

For this weekend, here's a card--Ioho, or Yew--from The Celtic Tree Oracle, which pleases the tree-hugger in me. To hug this particular tree, though, you might find yourself mystically transported into an ancient cemetery where--authors Liz Murray and Colin Murray tell us--the Breton Celts of France believed these yews "grow a root into the open mouth of each corpse." A fascinating image I now cannot shake. Okay...

Ioho/Yew brings word of life springing from death and decay. In that way, its Tarot equivalent might be the Judgement card, number XX. Both are cards of awakening, rebirth, regeneration. The human figures in Judgement answer the angel's clarion call to arise. All hope is not lost.
