Seven of Cups
The Wild Unknown Tarot
by Kim Krans
December 5-9, 2022: With six of its seven goblets turned rim-down, Kim Krans' stark Seven of Cups has the feeling of a reversed card and all that can imply. So, don't be surprised to find your mind going there. But, remember, the image's orientation is actually right-side up. (If, in a draw for a reading, you receive Krans' card reversed, that's an entirely different matter, but let's stay where we are for the moment.)
This unusual imaging of the Seven of Cups sets up an interesting tension as we attempt interpretation. Let this card touch down in your imagination--and your immediate situation--and see what it might portend.
Look carefully at the geometric image beneath the one central--and upright--goblet. The lines can suggest a cone formed of numerous flat surfaces. Or they might suggest a recessed open space, again shaped to fold up from its base and cup the open air.
Either/or. Maybe even both. How do you see it as you gaze on it? One way? Or does it shift from one thing to another?
So, this tension and this optical illusion tell us much about the Seven of Cups as a space of potential elusiveness, illusion, deception, self-deception but also creative ambiguity and fluidity. Determining how you see it and use it will be key for you this week.
A possible meaning for a range of cups upturned while one stands up on its base could symbolize a decision to choose one thing over a host of seductive alternatives. So, the responsibility to discern--not just wildly guess at--and choose the right thing this week might be high on your agenda.
