CARD OF THE WEEKEND: July 30-31, 2022

Seven of Swords

Rider-Waite Tarot

Art by Pamela Colman Smith

July 30-31, 2022: The gracefulness of Pixie Smith's smiling thief! He charmed his way into your life, and now he's making off with five of your swords--a batch of your thoughts, your ideas, your defenses, your strengths--and confidently turns to look behind himself as he prances away. He's not even concerned about whether the blades will cut his hands, or if he'll run into something he doesn't see coming his way. He got what he came for.

Traditionally, Seven of Swords has been the sign of something or someone in, or approaching, your surroundings that cannot be trusted.

Let this be an advisory to spend some time in serious inner and outer cleansing as well as shoring up your inner and outer defenses. This especially applies to your own thinking and how you can be your own enemy. What have you stolen from yourself? Or how do you render your own self vulnerable to delusion and exploitation?

Notice this, though. You've still got two good swords left. What do they represent, and what do you intend to do with them?

CARD OF THE WEEK: July 25-29, 2022

Six of Swords

Morgan-Greer Tarot

by Lloyd Morgan with art by Bill Greer

July 25-29, 2022: The quiet, somber Six of Swords traditionally depicts a journey over water and, in Bill Greer's art for Morgan-Greer Tarot, there's no sure, welcoming harbor in sight. Ahead? Just the seemingly endless stretch of flowing water and a hazy landscape.

One can imagine the Six of Swords telling of exile for the cloaked figure huddled behind a bunch of swords rising from the bottom of the rowboat. The boat moves from some unidentified past to some unidentified future. Readers often speak of this as a journey into the unknown, one requiring profound faith and a willingness to let go of both the past and the future.

A reversed Six of Swords could indicate that a possible journey has not yet begun, or that reluctance and resistance holds up its start, or that--in an even more negative turn--confusion dominates any possible and positive motion.

Even right-side up, this does not look like a pleasure trip. However, make the most of it by appreciating that, for once, you do not have to steer. You are not on your own. You do not have to know the way. You can take time to release your past efforts and all that you've been holding in your body and on your heart.

It's a good week to pay attention to your breathing, release into a feeling of centeredness, and observe what you can of what's flowing around and within you.

CARD OF THE WEEKEND: July 23-24, 2022

Nine of Cups

World Spirit Tarot

by Madame Onca O'Leary, Lauren O'Leary, and Jessica Godino

July 23-24, 2022:  Let's take a moment with our generous host who, looking out from the Nine of Cups, has quite an array of goblets to offer, each one distinct in design. Because our host has so much stored up, he's in a good position to share, and you can tell, just by looking at him, that he's proud to share his very best with you. This figure of abundance and satisfaction bids you treat yourself to everything of value. As always, Tarot counsels to choose wisely and don't overdo.

Since you have a weekend before you, you might try an active meditation in which you journey to this very scenario, meet the host, and have a chance to gaze into each of these intriguing goblets. What libation does each one hold? (BTW, do not assume that these potions are alcoholic in nature. Or even liquid.)  Which will you choose to consume and why? And then what?

CARD OF THE WEEK: July 18-22, 2022

Justice

The Nigel Jackson Tarot

by Nigel Jackson

July 18-22: Coming into the presence of the Justice archetype and energy, you have the opportunity to examine, assess, and adjust anything personal or external to you that needs reworking or discarding. Bring it to Mama Justice, and she will bring all of her powers of insight--through analysis, intuition, and wisdom--to bear on the situation.

In her high, airy realm, there are no distractions, and she faces you straight on, requiring you return her steady gaze. It's time for truth.

CARDS OF THE WEEKEND: July 16-17, 2022

Ace of Cups and Two of Cups

Oak, Ash & Thorn Tarot

by Stephanie Burrows with art by Adam Oehlers

July 16-17, 2022: So, Ace of Cups! And a bonus--the Two of Cups! Both so sweet, their images from the beautiful Oak, Ash & Thorn Tarot by Stephanie Burrows with Adam Oehlers' art.

For the Ace, please note the tiny squirrel face peering from just beneath the water's surface beneath the proffered gift--an acorn goblet--that floats in the air. Here Oehlers reimagines the classic otherworldly hand emerging from a cloud in many Tarot Aces.

Now look at the Two of Cups. The energy of relationship and sharing--Spirit to animal--has now been transferred from one living squirrel to another.

So, I might call this weekend's story "The Pass-Along." How do we receive from Spirit, and how do we pass along what we receive to the other beings with whom we share this three-dimensional world?

Two words to work with this week in your meditations, journaling, and action--source and purpose.

Have a sweet weekend!

CARD OF THE WEEK: July 11-15 , 2022

Artemis

Goddess Guidance Oracle Cards

by Doreen Virtue

July 11-15, 2022: Here's a card, named for Greek goddess Artemis, from a deck I don't own--Goddess Guidance Oracle Cards. I do own this card, though. It was drawn and given to me, for some reason, in some long-ago ritual or workshop. I don't recall anything more than that.

The deck's creator Doreen Virtue--author of numerous books and oracle decks on angels, archangels, and the like--is now also famous for converting to born-again Christianity and loudly denouncing her own lucrative career and allied New Age practices. Basically, anything that fails to track with strict focus on Jesus Christ, her Lord and savior.

Artemis, the card, has lived quietly in the corner of one of my home office's bookshelves for all this time and--again, for some reason--recently popped right off the shelf and fell at my feet. At the time, I was not moving anything around on that shelf. But cards speak up, often loudly, when they want attention, and this one did.

Needless to say, but I will, many of us fear for our own and our loved ones' safety these days. Danger can come at any time, in any place, and seemingly from out of nowhere. We need to stay alert, but we also need to fortify our spiritual protection.

Virtue turns to her concept of Jesus and only that. You and I are free to find our own sense of spiritual relationship and help. But do take time out this week to contemplate what that might mean in your life and personal practice. Stay safe and enjoy your week!

CARD OF THE WEEKEND: July 9-10, 2022

The Fool

Neo Tarot

by Jerico Mandybur with art by Daiana Ruiz

July 9-10, 2022:  Here we see a Fool actually engaged with his dog companion, and I love it. In the charming Neo Tarot deck, the pair of friends seem to be playing as the nimble Fool spins a hoop.

So often we see Tarot's traditional Fool ignoring the barking dog and rushing towards the precipice, completely heedless (or completely accepting) of any risk ahead, and we can interpret that in a variety of ways. This time, though, artist Daiana Ruiz's image of The Fool encourages you to take time out to play, to find your joy.

This is not only an opportunity for growth but also a way of resistance to all the exploitation and ugliness we see around us. Treasure and safeguard your right to rest, to breathe, to have fun, pleasure, and joy.

CARD OF THE WEEK: July 4-8, 2022

Three of Cups

The Wild Unknown Tarot

by Kim Krans

July 4-8, 2022: For me, Three of Cups has always been the creativity card. I like Kim Krans' image for The Wild Unknown Tarot with three birds gathered for consultation and collaboration on a tree branch. Birds in Tarot--and elsewhere--often symbolize communication, the bearing and sharing of messages and information.

I love this gathering of the minds. This looks, to me, like a conversation, and those upright goblets on the ground are aligned just so to suggest an openhearted, peaceful meeting of equals. Imagine the birds as witches who have drained their cups of shapeshifting potion and flown up to the branch, transitioning to a higher level of consciousness.

You might enjoy imagining yourself with wings, rising aloft and flying up to that branch of the tree to take your part in this trio. What are you all talking about and what is your particular contribution to the chat?

For your week, pay attention to the significance (or just plain fun) that you might anticipate in any upcoming conversation or meeting, especially one that concerns a creative project. Or you might find yourself engaged in an unexpected, unplanned get-together or wanting/needing to set up a meeting or chat. In any event, you can expect things to go quite well and prove fruitful. Enjoy!

CARD OF THE WEEKEND: July 2-3, 2022

Ten of Arrows

Greenwood Tarot

Art by Chesca Potter with writing by Marc Ryan

July 2-3, 2022: Ten of Arrows--as imagined by artist Chesca Potter and writer Marc Ryan for Greenwood Tarot--bears no resemblance to classical Tarot's familiar Ten of Swords; its meaning is radically different. Rather than the stark finality of the slaughter imaged by Pamela Colman Smith and those who follow her lead, Potter's painting shows a parent guiding a young child in learning how to shoot an arrow. Their clothing identifies them as members of a traditional society, one in which learning how to feed and skillfully care for and protect oneself and one's community is a matter of life or death.

Our CARD OF THE WEEKEND, then, speaks to the importance of wise guidance, expert teaching, and mentorship, especially as we all navigate times of challenge, confusion, and threat. And when we think of matters of protection and survival, the meaning of this card for you can be metaphorical or literal.

Having people in our lives who have walked difficult paths, knowing the rough patches as well as the sources of refreshment and grace, will be critical. Who are your teachers? Your role models? To whom do you or can you turn when it's time to make your next move?

Or perhaps the card might be talking about you. You have been serving or will serve in that important role for someone else.

The card can also suggest that it's time for someone to pass their knowledge, skills, and/or responsibilities along to someone else--or, at least, prepare them for the time when they will assume a more advanced status in the workplace, community, or family. Again, you could be either the teacher or the taught.
