CARD OF THE DAY: February 28, 2022

Three of Hearts

and card back

Piatnik's Cultural Heritage Lacquer Paintings

(No. 2383: Lacquer Painting from Russia)

February 28, 2022: This one is for those Russians of good conscience who, at their own peril, rise to oppose the invasion of Ukraine. They well know their autocratic leader will stop at nothing to maintain power.

Three of Hearts lines up with Tarot's Three of Cups to express a desire for love and harmony, for creativity that survives and overcomes destruction, and compassion that heals trauma. May this desire strengthen the hearts of many, and may evil in all its forms fall to defeat.

CARD OF THE WEEKEND: February 26-27, 2022

 Four of Wands

Oriens Animal Tarot

by Ambi Sun

February 26-27, 2022: Artist Ambi Sun's image for the Four of Wands suggests a bowerbird's delicate, freshly-constructed bower. For a male bowerbird, building a brightly-decorated bower is extremely important strategy to attract a mate. Our fellow here looks satisfied with his creation and poised to be selected by one of the species' notoriously picky females.

In Sun's understanding, our weekend card speaks of celebrations of commitment and fidelity through time. I would add that support and stability are key ideas here, too, especially when indicated by the strength of relationships--friendly, romantic, familial, collaborative, and so forth.

Lean in to these reliable and fruitful connections. Contribute to those where you can. We all need one another, and things go better when we go together.

Where are your social relationships working well, and where are they not working as well as you might like and deserve?

Contemplate the nature of the relationships you have and those you desire. What are the qualities you seek? How can you prepare yourself to better attract and sustain relationships that will satisfy you?

CARD OF THE DAY: February 25, 2022

 The Chariot

The Wild Unknown Tarot by Kim Krans

and Morgan-Greer Tarot by Lloyd Morgan with art by Bill Greer

February 25, 2022: Today's Chariot, from Kim Krans' The Wild Unknown Tarot, looks a little odd, at first, if you're used to a Rider-Waite-style deck like the Morgan-Greer. My goodness, where's our charioteer? Where's his chariot? And where's that other horse?

Well, I see the charioteer as that solar disk radiating down upon the single horse, and that horse serves as a fine symbol of channeled, focused will. The resolve and tight integration represented by this Major Arcana archetype have already been achieved. The resulting motion forward can be witnessed in the horse's breeze-swept mane. You can feel the energy inside this Tarot image, right?

The duality usually represented by the Rider-Waite horses of distinct colors--and harnessed by the charioteer--can be easily discerned here in the presence of the sun overhead and the crescent moon placed on the horse's forehead. The charioteer's crown of pentacles has been replaced by the horse's single pentacle pendant. And, to make the meaning even sharper, do check out Krans' perfect alignment of sun, crescent moon, long horse head, and pentacle.

The Chariot still tells us to pull ourselves together, keep our eyes on the prize, and get the job done. In Krans' conception of it, there can be no doubt about its meaning and inspiration.

CARD OF THE DAY: February 24, 2022

Ace of Diamonds

February 24, 2022: I'm loving the imaginative freedom that these playing cards offer. Today, let's look at the Ace of Diamonds.

As in Tarot, the Ace can suggest the beginning of a path or project or the smallest, single manifestation of an element--in this case, Diamond=Pentacle=Earth, things of or related to earthly, 3-D matter.

Our Ace looks a little lonely here, doesn't it? That was my first impression. So, within context, physical solitude or loneliness might be one reasonable interpretation.

A few other impressions came to mind, though:

  • something/someone new being perfectly situated in its expansive environment, like a seed newly planted in fertile soil (or conception? hmmm...!)
  • the single diamond of an engagement ring
  • and, finally and whimsically, a small open space where four curved objects have come together; think four white balloons or dinner plates tightly arranged, and you'll see what I mean!

I'm still thinking pregnancy!

What do you see when you look at this card? And how might you use that in a reading?

CARD OF THE DAY: February 23, 2022

 Ten of Clubs

February 23, 2022: If we were looking at an equivalent Tarot card right now, it would be the Ten of Wands, familiar to many of you. The classic image shows a single person carrying away a heavy load of wands. Typical code words for that card would be: burden, responsibilities, loaded plate, I have absolutely no bandwidth for more, and so forth.

A regular playing card deck seemingly gives us no such storytelling visuals to help with interpretation. At the same time, it also does not tie the reader to Rider-Waite tradition aside from the correlation of Clubs with Wands.

You can check up on what other playing card readers have hit upon. Or--and this is the fun part--you can figure things out for yourself. What might be useful to you?

I think it's a great idea to have a designated Tarot card to help you see where you might be carrying heavy things--physical, psychological, emotional, you name it--that you should either quickly find a place to set down or find someone else who really, really, really ought to bear them rather than you or bear them with you. So, I might choose to hold onto that useful way of looking at Ten of Clubs.

I'm way visually-oriented with divination cards, though. I can't help but notice a few things about the pattern of the clubs on the Ten.

First, I saw the neat inner circle of six clubs--an upper semicircle facing and mirroring a lower semicircle. I thought of a group circle dance or a sacred ritual circle. Next, I noticed the four watchtower clubs on the outside of that circle. See the four points?

In Tarot, a quartet of anything bears importance, since Tarot emphasizes four magickal tools/elements--Swords/Air; Cups/Water; Wands/Fire; Pentacles/Earth. In ritual magick, the spirits of these Four Corners are called forth. Accordingly, I could think of the Ten of Clubs as symbolizing an energetic gathering, then, one that could raise some of the highest energies.

As related to Tarot's Wands and to the energy level of  the number 10 in Tarot, the Ten of Clubs can suggest a 10-alarm fire's worth of energy, a pretty big deal magick-wise.

The cards are yours! You get to say what does and does not work in your practice of divination.

Let me know what you think about when you contemplate the Ten of Clubs!

CARD OF THE DAY: February 22, 2022

Leone

Ancient Minchiate Etruria

a reproduction of a 1725 Florentine Minchiate oracle deck

February 22, 2022: It's hard to look at the rearing lion in this minchiate deck and not think back to the often subdued lion in Tarot's Strength card. Though cousins, for sure, these great cats inhabit very different moments in life. For Tarot artists, Strength's lion might be depicted either under someone's forceful control or in peaceful co-existence. Our lion, today, however, is ready to rumble, no lady or angelic handler in sight.

Let's be clear. Today will not be one for hanging back or just trying to muddle through. You're called upon to rise and roar, to take decisive and forceful action where needed. Find the Leo and the leonine within yourself. Silence and invisibility are not the way. Channel golden energy for your voice and your shine.

CARD OF THE DAY: February 21, 2022

Jack of Spades

February 21, 2022: Surprise! I will be throwing traditional playing cards into the mix, now and again. That's for my own practice and experimentation, as I have not often used regular playing cards in divination.

Playing card decks are quite inexpensive and easy to find. You probably have a deck or two laying around your home. So, some of you who have not yet delved into the complex world of Tarot might enjoy giving playing cards a whirl for readings and might even find they suit you better--that is, if you don't miss Tarot's spectacular Major Arcana.

I have just discovered and enjoy Welsh writer Bev G's comprehensive guides on using playing cards as divination tools, particularly this page and this page on Exemplore. I will be spending some time in future weeks exploring her material and developing my own intuitive sense of things, as you might imagine. As I do, I might dip into this, now and again, for our explorations here on hummingwitch.

Today's Card of the Day is the Jack (aka Knave) of Spades!

This Jack is related to Tarot's Swords suit (Spades/Swords) but is not as socially-elevated a figure as a courtly Knight, nor is he a Tarot Page-like ingenu/e or student. As I work with playing cards, I'm going to think of my Jacks as smart, capable folks with everyday jobs and missions, objectives and tasks. I do not choose to think of them as servants of playing-card royalty or, in the sense of the alternate word for them--knaves--rogues and scoundrels.

So, what is our Jack of Spades doing here today?

Gazing foward and backward, inward and outward, up and down, this Jack has a sharp (and sometimes withering) 360-degree view of many things and can be relied upon to keep a watch on and analyze anything of interest to you. Our Jack is super-smart and communicative but never in a high-and-mighty way. You do have to know that, if necessary, he will read a bitch to filth!

If you have to make a decision today, this Jack will help you figure out all the angles. Need to pull together or edit some writing or speak your mind, clearly and effectively, in a debate or argument? Call upon your sidekick Jack. And, in any instance, this one will never let you get the wool pulled over your eyes.

Okay, see how much fun this can be?

As with Tarot, I really hope these posts inspire you to stretch your imagination and use these tools in your own creative way. I would love to hear from you and find out how this is working for you!

CARDS OF THE WEEKEND: February 19-20, 2022

Dancing Prayer and Calm Within

from Sacred Geometry Cards for the Visionary Path

by Francene Hart

February 19-20, 2022: As one of Francene Hart's more hallucinogenic Sacred Geometry oracle cards, Dancing Prayer pulses with vitality that encompasses and radiates from the central, multi-limbed figure. Do make time to dance this weekend.

Think of your dance as both received by and emanating from your physical body, perhaps simultaneously. Examine Hart's image closely to get an understanding of its overlapping realities.

Hart's Calm Within stays steady amid the lightning storm no matter whether that storm is external or actually issues from within this figure's own system. I like to think of it that way--the power of lightning flashing from within a still, grounded body. What unexpected high magick might manifest? Take time to ground yourself, and see what happens next.

CARD OF THE DAY: February 18, 2022

Eight of Swords

The Wild Unknown Tarot

by Kim Krans

February 18, 2022: In The Wild Unknown Tarot, Kim Krans offers a different vision of the Eight of Swords than what we're used to seeing. No lady bound in rope and surrounded by swords (Γ‘ la Pamela Colman Smith's Rider-Waite). This time, a butterfly's chrysalis hangs from a sword suspended in mid-air, surrounded by seven other raised swords. A unique story, as I see it.

In this image, there's purpose, indications of the enclosed conditions and time necessary for a butterfly to develop. There's also interesting ambiguity for the storyteller/reader to play with. Is this chrysalis threatened by all those surrounding swords? Or are the swords there to protect it as the butterfly develops?

Of course, you want to steer clear of the folded instruction sheet tucked into this deck's package which merely speaks of imprisonment and frustration. It appears that, while Krans dutifully gives us a dire interpretation of the Eight of Swords, her visual art can't help but provide a positive meaning and an eventual escape route for whomever or whatever is bound.

Whatever this suggests for you today, one ultimate message might be: Leave it alone; give it its due time.

Oh, also: Don't underestimate the power of a Tarot artist to take something familiar and show it to you fresh, with an imaginative spin, and make you care about it again.

Four of Cups

Morgan-Greer Tarot

by Lloyd Morgan with art by Bill Greer

February17, 2022: Oh, Child of Earth to whom many graces have been granted, today Spirit brings you a new cup, a new draught!

This is the story Bill Greer's artwork, for the Morgan-Greer's Four of Cups, suggests to me.

There is something beyond the things of everyday manifestation, everyday survival, everyday fulfillment of needs and desires that is offered here.

When your basic needs are fulfilled, what remains unfulfilled?

When your basic senses perceive, what remains as yet unperceived?

Will you reach forward today and take that offered cup?

CARD OF THE DAY: February 16, 2022

 The Empress

The Light and Shadow Tarot

Brian Williams with art by Michael Goepferd

February 16, 2022: The cards in The Light and Shadow Tarot's gorgeous black-and-white deck are so large, you might feel moved to frame and hang them rather than shuffle and read them. A bit large for shuffling, I find, but so intriguing, you can definitely feel their energy and hear their stories.

A most welcome card to get, in any case, is The Empress, as I have long held onto what a Tarot teacher once told our class: The Empress blesses every layout in which she appears, turns any iffy or negative situation to something positive. As you can imagine, when The Empress comes to call, it's lovely to be able to reassure a worried querent.

Artist Michael Goepferd's Empress strikes me as being alert, active, a vision rising from the natural world--waves, fish, birds, sheaves of wheat arrayed around her, the flower in her left hand, the pelican whose head she cups with her right hand. Note the bottom of card where enthroned royalty represent each of Tarot's four elemental tools--Swords/Air, Wands/Fire, Cups/Water, Pentacles/Earth. Each has extraordinary powers, but all are ruled by her, and it is she who deploys them.

So, when The Empress shows up, all bow, ready to do her bidding.

Focus on how a situation might be turned around, and seek her favor.

CARD OF THE DAY: February 15, 2022

Sculpture of a Kneeling Knight or King

Spain, ca. 1175-1225

The Cloisters, The Metropolitan Museum of Art

February 15, 2022: A visit to the Met's Cloisters this past Friday brought me face to face with this kneeling knight--or king--and I thought about this one:

Colin Kaepernick
social justice activist/former NFL quarterback

Some days, you don't need official cards from any deck. You just need your open mind. The images simply come to you and speak their truths.

The Spanish knight/king kneels in honor of someone we cannot see.

Colin Kaepernick kneels in honor of values we should see reflected more often in our society.

That's it for today. A day to think about what you value most strongly, what you would sacrifice to uphold. A day to think about principle, about selfless courage despite the ultimate consequence.

CARD OF THE DAY: February 14, 2022

Queen of Swords

Universal Waite Tarot

by Pamela Colman Smith

with recoloring by Mary Hanson-Roberts

February 14, 2022: Here's the Queen of Swords, her marble throne mounted on hilly, cloud-wrapped terrain. One of her hands grasps an absolutely no-nonsense sword straight up in a sign of authority. The other hand gestures as if the queen is in the midst of giving a speech to the masses. An austere, icy Sky Queen, she commands attention and respect.

But, as is often the case, Tarot will compel one's focus towards one detail or another, offering nuance.

Today, Pamela Colman Smith's Queen of Swords (in the recolored Universal Waite Tarot) wanted me to notice and focus on the warm colors of red, orange, and gold. She took my eyes to each manifestation of these colors and said, "The source of my strength."

Do not miss the necklace of chunky red stones resting over the queen's heart chakra. (Happy Valentine's DayπŸ’–, btw!)

I can almost hear her sword whoosh through the air or strike a rock or--as it might be doing now--simply vibrate its clear, formidable energy into the space around it.

Tarot's Swords/Air cards deal with thought, writing, speech, and any kind of vocalization. (And, yes, with conflict and arguments, where those are relevant to the story.) Even the golden butterflies, creatures of air that form her unusual crown, radiate a nobility and strength of mind.

Speak with strength, with fire, with force today, and never falter.

CARD OF THE WEEKEND: February 12-13, 2022

Nine of Wands

Golden Botticelli Tarot

by Atanas Alexandrov Atanassov

February 12-13, 2022: In A. A. Atanassov's Nine of Wands (Golden Botticelli Tarot), a queenly pea hen perches atop the central wand of a barrier-like arrangement of wands, Tarot's fire energy implements. A rider has dismounted his white steed, waiting, ready for something that might approach from the left (the past). The position of the hand on his waist further shows that he and the horse are at rest, not walking forward. With the nine wands to his right, he stands guard.

Protection is one of many symbolic meanings associated with pea fowl (peacocks, male; pea hen, such as we have here, female) across different cultural traditions.

Key words for you this weekend could be: self-care, self-protection, watchfulness, protecting your space, boundary-setting, grounding, self-confidence, and resourcefulness.

CARDS OF THE DAY: February 11, 2022

Queen of Cups and Two of Pentacles

Neo Tarot

by Jerico Mandybur with art by Daiana Ruiz

February 11, 2022: I so love the figures in Neo Tarot, their graceful dynamism. So here are two drawn for your day:

One, the Queen of Cups, carefully balances a goblet constructed of four disparate parts while holding a big orange ball steady beneath one firmly-planted foot. Two serene Black cherubs hover above, eyes closed in prayer.

The other--the figure in the Two of Pentacles--prances forward while expertly juggling two pentacle-balls in a figure-eight pattern, the energy of eternal motion.

Cups symbolize, among other things, human feelings, and pentacles can represent practicalities.

Looking at these two cards--with their two cherubs and two pentacle/juggling balls--I'm thinking about that expression: "Feelings are not facts."

But sometimes our feelings (Cups) really are facts (Pentacles) that need acknowledgement and acceptance as such. Know when this is true. Respect the Queen--of your feelings--and learn how to juggle, alternate, balance, and work with these feelings in a safe, fruitful way.

They are dynamic and changeable, and you can make exciting magic out of them, if you juggle them just right. The cherubs bring tender affirmation to your project or situation and heal any sense of doubt or defeat you might be harboring.

The act of walking or dancing moves us out of and into balance and out of and into balance again--does it not?--step after step. The act of motion or dancing in a wheelchair opens up new spaces to be and express. Everyday magick.

We move to claim something new and be something new.

Let's dance!

CARD OF THE DAY: February 10, 2022

Ace of Pentacles

from World Spirit Tarot

by Madame Onca O'Leary, Lauren O'Leary, and Jessica Godino

February 10, 2022: Sometimes if a card's aesthetics fail to resonate with me, I might ignore most of it and zoom in on one or more particular details that catch my eye or seem strongly relevant to the querent or question.

In the World Spirit Tarot's Ace of Pentacles, I am fascinated by the alignment of Sun and Moon in its backdrop. (You might enjoy this blog post from La Fuente Imports.) With the influence of both of these very different cosmic bodies, a tangible bit of earthly matter (the pentacle) has been formed, and so begins something new in the world of 3D, time-based existence.

As a Card of the Day, it can also remind you to give time time and take one practical step after another. Don't rush. Don't get ahead of yourself. But do at least one action to prepare the way for all the important steps that will follow.

When you feel overwhelmed, break things down into small components, order them, and give due attention to each in turn. Respect--even enjoy--the process.

Step by step, bit by bit, something is shaping up for you!

CARDS OF THE DAY: February 9, 2022

Ten of Cups and The Sun

Oak, Ash & Thorn Tarot

by Stephanie Burrows with art by Adam Oehlers

February 9, 2022: A family rejoices to celebrate their lives, their love, their abundance. The familiar Pamela Colman Smith imagery for Ten of Cups shows a human family lifting arms in gratitude and joy under the arc of a rainbow. Re-imagined by Adam Oehlers for Stephanie Burrows' Oak, Ash & Thorn Tarot, a family of well-fed squirrels gathers in an oak tree under the life-giving sun.

We have two cards today. I could not resist adding Oehler's Sun to the narrative. In this unusual imagery, we're shown a dove bearing a stem of red roses as it flies through a rainstorm. In the distance, the sun rises behind a cover of clouds.

Put these two cards together--so much feeling! The second card, in particular, is laden with love and hope offered by Spirit. Accept this gift.

"Through this storm, I carry roses to you."

CARD OF THE DAY: February 8, 2022

 The Witch (The Magician)

Daughters of the Moon Tarot

by Ffiona Morgan

February 8, 2022: Ffiona Morgan's feminist image, for Daughters of the Moon Tarot, re-envisions The Magician as The Witch

Like Tarot's traditional Magician, our beautiful Witch is surrounded by all the magick-al elements as they exist on Earth--air, water, fire, and forest-earth. She lifts a clear crystal wand to the air and the night sky and dips another wand into her cauldron of water, channeling the energies of Spirit through her own empathic body.

You'll find beloved witchy familiars tucked away in the image--an owl and a cat--while the crescent moon keeps watch from above and a blue/white flame of Spirit has been activated by the Witch's artful deeds.

This archetype represents utmost focus, confidence, resourcefulness, and capability. So, as a card for your day, consider The Witch to be a voice whispering in your ear "You can" at those moments when you least believe you can, "You've got this" when you're telling yourself "I don't have anything." She represents will, in a positive sense, and synergy.

Challenge your current belief system if it does not serve you and the best for you.

What skills and tools do you have that you might have forgotten about or disowned? Reclaim them.

Pull all your resources together. Sharpen your focus.

Engage Spirit in your actions--always and in all ways.

CARD OF THE DAY: February 7, 2022

Five of Cups

Spiral Tarot

by Kay Steventon

February 7, 2022: Here's another example of a Tarot card that seems to tell a different story than the one we're used to from decks that model themselves more closely after Pamela Colman Smith imagery.

Our friend here, in Kay Steventon's Spiral Tarot Five of Cups, does not appear to be the familiar grieving party so much as a person acted upon by--or, plausibly, one acting upon--a situation in upheaval and flux. Is she at the mercy of this drastic change? Or, for worse or better, was she the cause of it?

The card does nicely emphasize the gleaming goblets that remain for her enjoyment once she's able to gather herself and turn away from whatever upset has occurred. So, that much remains clear.

I like the way the ambivalence of this image makes me think of her possible agency in the cause and aftereffect of the change. So, my counsel today is to make your move in light of your own agency. You may cause something dramatic and disruptive to occur but, baby, believe me, you can ride those waves! You can! Do it!

CARD OF THE WEEKEND: February 5-6, 2022

Six of Swords

The Alchemical Tarot

by Robert M. Place

February 5-6, 2022: As created by Robert M. Place for The Alchemical Tarot, the Six of Swords shows a distant sailboat, powered by a fulsome, stormy wind, bearing several indistinct figures across an expanse of sea. The almost palpable presence of wind in this image reminds us that the Swords cards represent the primal element of Air and, hence, all things symbolized by Air: mind and thought, speed and sharpness, speech and sound, writing and all things in written form, science and analysis.

The orientation of this image's features--all strongly directed towards the left edge of the card--can suggest movement towards the past. (Forward in time is towards the right edge.) In this case, driven by wind, it would be swift and decisive movement, a kind of doubling back or return with a clear mission and well-crafted strategy in mind.

This is very different from Pamela Colman Smith's Six of Swords which shows a close-up row boat with a rower bearing a draped figure in a rightward direction towards a distant shore. The story there, as I and others have seen it, tells of a journey towards an unknown future--one ideally approached with an attitude of faith and release of one's habitual will to seize control of things.

By contrast, the six distinct and airborne swords of Place's card point towards the left with the determination of weapons in the hands of invisible but determined warriors. Previously, we've seen examples of how different decks can tell different stories. This contrast between Smith's and Place's ideas shows how useful it is to develop one's own strong relationship with a deck, learn what its creator values, and how it communicates.

Since the Place deck came to mind--and hand--today, let's stay with its version of things. Our Six of Swords can counsel a necessary and swift review of some past matter and a crystal-clear plan for how to deal with it, likely a multi-pronged approach or one involving more than a few collaborators, each of whom have unique qualities--look at the differences in those swords--or unique roles to play but work in strong alignment with one another.

And the CARD OF THE WEEK is...

Queen of Pentacles

from Universal Waite Tarot

art by Pamela Colman Smith with recoloring by Mary Hanson-Roberts

Here's a big thanks πŸ’“ to those of you who played along to guess our CARD OF THE WEEK!

Unfortunately, not only did our humble, thoughtful, lovingly concerned Queen of Pentacles elude all of you, but you guessed neither a Queen of any suit nor any Pentacles card.

So...sorry to say...no winner. 😒

Not this time, at least. But I think I'll try this contest again in March. So, keep watch for another chance to win a reading!

In the meantime, for the rest of this week, do enjoy the Queen's practicality, steadiness, and nurturing energy. She is the monarch of all things necessary for secure, healthy material life and growth. She will remind you that you can find the power of care and resourcefulness within yourself. Like her, you will ground yourself within the beauty you find all around you--including that which you yourself have created or attracted to you. Enjoy this embodied moment we call life.
